Mabry Mill

One of the most sought-after, photographed, and picturesque destinations on the Blue Ridge Parkway is at milepost 176: The Mabry Mill.

This iconic building exemplifies Appalachian life and the industrious people of a bygone era. Built by Edwin Mabry and his wife Lizzy in 1910, the mill used the water-power to grind corn and cut lumber for over thirty years. Also on the property is Matthew's Cabin, which was moved to the Mabry Mill in 1956. The 1869 home was built by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Matthews in Galax, where the family raised their eight children.   

Mabry Mill is now part of the National Park Service, which often holds on-site cultural demonstrations involving weaving, basketry, and spinning. 

These events and the vintage cabin and mill offer visitors a glimpse into traditional milling practices and day-to-day life in the mountains. 

A nearby National Park to include in your itinerary is the Rocky Knob Recreation Area. The 4,000-acre park offers picnic tables, challenging trails to hike, breathtaking overlooks, and the remnants of homes from the 1900s. • Head north on US-52 N/S Main St toward US-58 BUS E.
• Turn left onto US-58 W.
• Continue straight to stay on US-58 W.
• Merge onto the Blue Ridge Parkway.
• Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, following signs for Mabry Mill.
• Turn into the Mabry Mill parking area.
