An Easy Weekend Escape

For those living on the west coast, a vacation rental La Paz makes for an easy weekend escape. Just two hours by plane from Los Angeles, this vibrant port city is making waves as an adventure-tourism destination. La Paz is located on the southeastern edge of the Baja California Peninsula, and lures visitors with its pristine, isolated beaches and thrilling eco-tours. Despite being Baja California Sur’s largest city and state capital, La Paz manages to maintain some of its provincial charms, and features one of Mexico’s most beautiful Malecons (seaside promenade) overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

If you’re planning a Mexico getaway to La Paz, you can enjoy everything from whale watching and sea kayaking to al fresco dining at the Marina Cortez. CasaGo can help you plan every detail of your vacation to one of Baja’s top travel destinations, whether you need inspiration on popular tours or want to treat your family to an oceanfront vacation rental!

Things to Do in La Paz

La Paz is famous for its magnificent beaches and diversity of water sports. Some of the prettiest beaches for sunbathing and swimming are just north of town on the way to Tecolote. La Concha, Playa el Coromuel, Playa el Playa del Tesoro, Playa Palmira, Playa Balandra and Playa el Tecolote are among the most popular.

La Paz has no shortage of activities and attractions to keep you busy. Consider including some of these things to do in your itinerary:

  • Take a boat tour of Espiritu Santo island, where you can swim with sea lions
  • Enjoy championship golf at Paraiso del Mar, Costa Baja or Bahia de los Sueños
  • Sea kayaking to the beaches of San Jose island
  • Snorkeling and scuba diving among ship wrecks and coral reefs
  • Go whale watching (January to April) for gray and humpback whales
  • Do some shopping and people watching on the Malecon
  • Explore the lovely Cathedral Nuestra Señora de La Paz
  • Soak in the sunshine at Playa el Tecolate
  • Try a Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) boarding excursion
  • Sportfishing for marlin and roosterfish (or rent a panga for some family fun)
  • Go shopping for jewelry and crafts made by talented artisans
  • Splurge on gourmet cuisine from one of many La Paz restaurants

Car rentals are great way to explore La Paz and the surrounding countryside. To save a little cash, consider booking your rental in advance, and always ask for full insurance coverage, since your US insurance is not valid in Mexico. Car rental agencies can be found in the La Paz airport and along the Malecon. Taxi travel is very affordable in La Paz and another convenient means of getting around to visit area attractions. Taxis do not have meters, so always negotiate a price before setting off.

To enter Mexico by air, land or sea, you must present a current passport and tourist card, the latter of which are valid for up to 180 days. You can apply for a tourist card online by visiting the website of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute.

While there is no “best time” to visit La Paz, September and October are the region’s rainiest months. December through April is high tourist season, when daytime temperatures hover in the mid-70s and 80s.
