About

Hendry's Beach is a small crescent-shaped beach at the base of cliffs north of downtown Santa Barbara. Officially known as Arroyo Burro Beach Park, it offers breathtaking ocean views, stunning sunsets, and water and beach activities. For these reasons and more, it is popular with families, sunbathers, and dog owners.

The sandy expanse is idyllic for sunbathers and families with children since no volleyball courts dominate the sand. While there aren't watersports vendors, it attracts surfers, bodyboarding, paddleboarders, and kayakers who haul their boards and gear.

The picturesque backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains enhances your experience. At sunset, it is a photographer's dream setting, when the Golden Hour paints the sand, sea, and mountains with subtle hues.

While Hendry's Beach is small, it is big on features. There is a grass park that is perfect for a game of badminton, restrooms, showers, trails, and lifeguards. Dogs are allowed at the beach but must be leashed unless you are east of the Arroyo Burro Creek. And if you do bring your furry friend, there is a dog wash to clean off sand and seawater.

Available grills on site are perfect for grilling hot dogs and hamburgers to enjoy at the picnic tables. If you don't feel like cooking or packing a picnic, book a table at the Boathouse at Hendry's Beach. This popular eatery offers tasty fare with ocean views and a patio with umbrella-covered tables.

When seeking a less crowded beach with stellar amenities, scenery, and views, visit Hendry's Beach.

Hendry's Beach: Fun Facts & Cool Features

A fun fact is that Hendry's Beach is next door to another top area attraction, the Douglas Family Preserve. This open-space area has cliffs overlooking the Arroyo Burro Beach and trails offering bird' s-eye ocean views. It's a popular spot for dog owners because pets can be off-leash in the preserve.

A cool feature that will appeal to water sports enthusiasts is that it is well-known for its surfing conditions. This is especially true from summer to fall, making Hendry's Beach a hotspot for surfers.

Another unique aspect is the vibrant tide pools teeming with marine life. During low tide, visitors can explore and discover fascinating sea creatures, transforming a fun-filled day at the beach into an immersive educational experience.

While the beach has charcoal grills and is home to a popular restaurant, it is close enough to other eateries to plan a meal after soaking up the sun. Nearby Mesa Cafe & Bar opens at 7 AM, making it a go-to for hearty breakfasts before a day of fun in the sun.

Lastly, the breathtaking sunsets at Hendry's Beach are magical. Whether you watch the sun dip over the horizon on the beach or atop the cliffs, you are in for a wondrous moment.

This unique combination of natural beauty, beach, and water activities, as well as top-notch amenities, make Hendry's Beach a must-visit during a stay in Santa Barbara.
