Idyllwild

Sitting at the foot of San Jacinto State Park at an elevation of over 5,400 feet in Southern California, the small town of Idyllwild offers a peaceful mountain retreat in an utterly unique community. As a four-season town with sprawling pine forests and towering granite peaks, it’s amazing to think the palm-tree-lined avenues of Palm Springs lay only 45 minutes away.

Located about 2 hours from L.A., and seemingly a world apart from the Hollywoodesque desert oasis below, Idyllwild is known as a cultural center in the middle of the wilderness. Originally inhabited by the Cahuilla people, the area later became a hub for logging and ranching before evolving into a resort town in the early 1900s.

Though only a short day-trip from major hubs in Southern California, Idyllwild can feel otherworldly and distinctly remote. This high-elevation community has long been revered as a summer escape, as well as an accessible trip from the coast to the peaks to catch a glimpse of snow in winter. The town’s peaceful vibe enhances its extremely walkable center, eclectic shops, cafes, and amazing dining experiences.

Nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and wellness seekers are all attracted to Idyllwild’s scenic surroundings. Along with an extensive trail system for hiking, Idyllwild is also a premier destination for rock climbers and outdoor aficionados.

Once conceived to become the “Alps of Southern California”, this quaint unincorporated town continues to provide visitors the perfect opportunity to unwind and unplug in the cool mountain air.

Fun fact: Underscoring Idyllwild’s unique essence is its ongoing appointment of ceremonial mayor “Max” and his descendants from a line of distinguished golden retrievers.
