Idyllwild's story goes back to the Cahuilla people, who called the San Jacinto Mountains home long before any newcomers arrived. In the late 1800s, settlers came looking for timber and land to ranch. Back then, pioneers called the spot Strawberry Valley because wild strawberries grew everywhere.
Most settlers chose the lowlands for farming, but when the summer heat became unbearable, they headed for the cooler air of the Strawberry Valley. Over time, visitors came not just for relief, but to stay.
Such a shift in Idyllwild's popularity was evident in 1901, when a sanatorium opened. Created by doctors, the facility attracted patients with tuberculosis seeking relief in the cool, dry climate. Healthy guests also visited, seeking a relaxing getaway. By 1903, the sanatorium had closed and become a resort hotel. Sadly, it burned down in 1904, but in its place rose the Idyllwild Inn that is still operational today.
The town's development into an artistic hub took shape in the mid-20th century. Visionaries saw the potential for a community dedicated to arts and education. The Idyllwild Arts Foundation was founded in 1946, and it later established the Idyllwild Arts Academy and Summer Program. These institutions attracted artists, musicians, and writers, cementing the town's reputation as a creative enclave.
Today, Downtown Idyllwild is where art galleries, unique shops, and quaint restaurants line the streets. Its history is a blend of Native American heritage, pioneer spirit, and artistic passion, creating a destination with a story to tell.

One of the town's most famous features is its mayor. In 2012, the town held an election where residents could nominate their pets for the position, with proceeds benefiting a local animal rescue organization.
A golden retriever named Max became the first mayor, followed by Mayor Max II and now Mayor Max III, all golden retrievers. Meeting the mayor and his deputies on a visit adds a fun element.
And then there's the name change from Strawberry Valley to Idyllwild. In the mid-20th century, locals felt the town needed a better name to reflect the shift toward an artistic community. So, they chose "Idyll," which suggests a peaceful setting, while "wild" connects to the untamed beauty of the San Jacinto Mountains.
Downtown Idyllwild is also a gateway to incredible outdoor adventures. Just minutes from the central flagpole are trailheads leading into the San Jacinto Wilderness and Tahquitz Peak. These trails range from easy strolls to challengingascents, including the climb to San Jacinto Peak, one of Southern California's highest points. Such proximity to the wilderness means you can shop in the morning and then visit the Idyllwild Nature Center in the afternoon.
With the backdrop of Tahquitz Rock and Suicide Rock, Idyllwild offers a postcard setting. Aside from being photo-worthy, the cliffs at Tahquitz Rock attract rock climbers. In fact, the iconic mountain is known as the birthplace of rock climbing.
