Located on a seaside mesa at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range in Baja California Sur, Todos Santos is a welcome haven for artists, surfers, travelers, and free spirits. It is one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos,” magical towns, and will surely cast a spell on you. Whether surfing nearby Cerritos Beach or strolling through art galleries along Calle Benito Juarez, Todos Santos is a charming destination beyond the hustle and bustle of the neighboring ports. A visit to this vibrant artsy village, located halfway between Los Cabos and La Paz on the lower Baja California Sur peninsula, is popular for day-trips from the larger cities. Yet, what better way to discover the area’s wonders than a vacation getaway to Todos Santos and this oasis along Baja’s Pacific Coast?
Founded in 1723 by Jesuit missionaries as they made their way up the Californias, the town of Todos Santos means “All Saints.” In 2006 it was officially designated as a Pueblo Mágico by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism. Amongst travelers, in June of 2010 TripAdvisor named Todos Santos as one of their “top emerging global destinations.”
The eclectic town has been made even more popular due to the urban legend that Hotel California in Todos Santos inspired the rock ‘n roll classic of the same name. The hotel, founded in 1948, says there is no truth to such theories, inviting visitors instead to experience its real history by dining at the welcome open-air restaurant and bar.
Todos Santos is home to remarkable mango orchards and palm-lined pathways that lead to white sandy beaches overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Colonial-style architecture and remnants of elegant buildings can be found in parts of Todos Santos. Many of these point to the area’s legacy of sugar cane production at a time when freshwater was abundant. Though located in an arid climate, organic agriculture and farming remain prominent in the region. The area is also known for its Mangates (mango treats).
Todos Santos also hosts several international festivals, from film to reggae, craft beer to art, and much more. It is also renowned for annual turtle releases under the protective care of environmental organizations.
Surf paradise in Baja California Sur lies just 15 minutes south of Todos Santos at Cerritos Beach in El Pescadero. Over two miles of fine soft sand extend south of a rugged cliff overlooking Cerritos Beach. This is a top spot for visitors and locals alike. Calmer waves in shallower parts along the shore are perfect for all ages, distinguishing Cerritos Beach as one of the most swimmable in the area. Swells further out reflect what Cerritos Beach is best known for – perfect surfing conditions. Whether you are an experienced or beginner surfer, Cerritos Beach is one of the best surf spots in Baja California Sur. With numerous surf schools and rental shops nearby, it’s easy to get out and enjoy the waves.
Cradled between the surf and the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, Cerritos Beach is part of the agricultural town of El Pescadero. The laid-back vibe of the area, enhanced by smaller crowds of people in general, makes this a popular destination for those looking for calm walks on the beach, horseback riding, snorkeling, and of course, surfing. From November to March, this is also a top destination for whale-watching, while just north in Todos Santos you may come upon a sea turtle release.

Each of these airports is about 1.5 – 2 hours driving distance from Todos Santos. Take your time and enjoy the open-air patio as all dishes are made to order.
Continue your journey with a stroll along Calle Benito Juarez, renowned for colorful papel picado overhead that complements the inviting art galleries and handcrafts lining the street. While along Calle Juarez, stop for a picture at the colorful Todos Santos sign right across from the Todos Santos Mission Church. Venture on to the somewhat mistakenly infamous Hotel California for a cool drink at what centuries ago was the first bar to serve ice-cold beer in town.
Take the afternoon to enjoy the waves, surf, and tranquil beaches in and around Todos Santos. Join a surf class at Cerritos Beach and get ready to hit the waves at one of Mexico’s best surf spots. For true adventurers, hike down the lush jungle-like entrance to Palm Beach (Playa San Pedro) that opens out to nearly virgin sands and one of the most picturesque spots on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
After a day with sand between your toes, wind down with the authentic essence of Mexican cuisine at Los Adobes de Todos Santos. Fresh herbs cultivated in their own garden is only one of the unique touches to this idyllic culinary destination.
