Burritt on the Mountain

The site was built in 1938 by Dr. William Burritt, a prominent local physician, who designed his mansion with forward-thinking features. 

After his passing in 1955, with no heirs, Dr. Burritt's estate was donated to the city and became Huntsville's first museum. Over the decades, additional structures, including historic homes and barns representing 19th-century rural life in Alabama, were incorporated.

Some fun facts are the architectural and design elements of Burritt on the Mountain. When the original mansion caught fire, Dr. Burritt incorporated innovative design features in the rebuild. While he still used bales of hay as insulation in the walls, he created concrete shingles and an asbestos-concrete exterior to prevent fires. 

Dr. Burritt designed the unusual X-shape of the mansion to maximize natural airflow, light, and views. He also featured Art Deco, Federal, Beau Arts, and Classical Revival design elements. All these combine to make for an eccentric mansion.

The live demonstrations at the park attract the curious and history buffs. You'll witness blacksmithing, spinning, and farming techniques that provide an up-close look at life on the frontier.
