About
What does pond digging, a gas station, and a former car wash and laundromat have in common? The answer: Boarhog's Barbeque.
This authentic BBQ joint is east of Huntsville on HI 72 and is owned and operated by Roger and Becky Owens. Before becoming a pit boss, Roger was in the construction business, most notably in drilling ponds. The inconsistency of work made Roger consider other income, so he began serving pit-style BBQ at the Citco gas station they managed.
News spread about his hickory-smoked food, and the couple officially launched the eatery in 2015. Roger used his CB call sign, "Boarhog," for the name, and they were off and running.
Becky used her accounting background to manage the front of house while Roger focused on the mouth-watering BBQ. Success begets success, and in 2020, they relocated to their current location, a former laundromat and car wash.
Every dish is made fresh daily and has earned a loyal following for its low and slow-smoked meats. These include pulled pork, brisket, and chicken. You'll also find hamburgers, wings, bologna, and ham, promising something even for the pickiest eaters.
Its eastern location puts it close to Rocket City landmarks like Monte Sano State Park, Burritt on the Mountain, and Wernher Von Braun Planetarium. Such convenience translates into being able to plan an itinerary around these iconic attractions with a meal at Boarhog's.

Vibe
The first test of an authentic BBQ joint is its facility. Most are shacks along backroads or interstates that lack curb appeal but deliver big on flavor. Boarhog's Barbeque meets this criterion, lying off the highway in a refurbished limestone building.
The bright, modern signage and ample parking make it a winner for those zipping up and down the highway. And when you step out of the car, you'll detect the second test of pit barbecue: the scent of hickory smoke on the wind.
The laundromat's interior has been transformed into an open concept with an exposed ceiling, tile floor, and ample seating. Several flat-screen TVs will appeal to sports fans while the staff dishes out heaping bowls of Southern hospitality. It's the type of place that attracts all walks of life and where the food unites folks, letting them put aside differences.
When you visit, you'll feel more like family than a customer, which is why it's a must-visit on a Huntsville vacation.
Boarhog's Barbeque: Menu & Drinks
The third and final test of a BBQ eatery is, of course, the food. Once more, Boarhog's meets the criteria with flying colors.
Unique to this restaurant are the creative options not found at many BBQ joints. A prime example is the loaded nachos stacked with your choice of pork, chicken, or brisket with cheese, sour cream, grilled jalapenos, onions, and tomatoes.
Also of note are the loaded and smothered potatoes. These Idaho spuds come with your choice of smoked meat along withthe fixings. For the ultimate meal, order the Smothered, which includes a sliced, fried potato, your choice of meat and cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, diced tomatoes, and jalapenos.
Moving to the traditional BBQ items, the pulled pork reigns supreme. This Southern classic is moist and rich with a smoky profile, making it a must-try for first-time visitors. Sauces include a tangy vinegar-based option and Alabama white sauce.
Another winner is the smoked brisket. This dish showcases Boarhog's commitment to traditional barbecue techniques, with a tenderness that results from hours in the smoker. The brisket's deep, caramelized bark adds a delightful crunch to balance the juicy interior.
For drinks, you'll find the classic Southern staple–sweet iced tea–along with various soft drinks. Beer lovers will be pleased with the bottled, draft, and pitcher options. You'll find the perfect beverage to toast a day exploring local landmarks like the J.D. & Annie S. Hays Nature Preserve.
Visiting Boarhog's Barbecue offers a hog-wild Bama dining experience, where fall-off-the-bone smoked meats are the star of the show.
