The Airport Diner is so much like what you think a 1940s diner should be—the cool vibe, the perfect diner food, comfortable seating in big booths, and fantastic staff. We enjoy this location not only for the food but for the theming (it is a real vintage diner, which means there’s a lot to see while you’re here).
The cool thing about The Airport Diner is it’s located right at the private airport in Fredericksburg. The runway is literally right outside the door to the diner.
And when you want real, authentic diner food (not the fancy stuff), this is an excellent place to visit. Come for lunch or breakfast (they do not do dinner here) and expect to leave with leftovers to take home.
From the theming to the food and staff, The Airport Diner has definitely become a tradition in our family to visit whenever we can.
So stop on by, enjoy—and who knows, maybe catch a take-off and landing or two!
Vibe
Walking into The Airport Diner, you will see all of the theming throughout (some planes hanging from the ceiling, for example), making you feel like you are stepping back in time. It’s a casual, relaxed place to visit.
Interestingly, The Diner is a part of the Hanger Hotel, which used to be just for pilots but today serves anyone. It has the look of a WWII hangar from the 1940s and is quite stunning in terms of the replication it offers.
The Hangar Hotel is well maintained and offers a great history lesson itself when you visit the region, especially thanks to the onsite airplane memorabilia and the USO history here.
History lovers, flying lovers, and just about anyone else can appreciate it.
The Airport Diner: Menu & Drinks
The menu is excellent, especially for breakfast.
One of the best options is the Flying Flapjacks, made just like you may remember growing up with years ago. The strawberries and syrup make it that much better. I also like the Breakfast Tacos and Mach MIgas.
For lunch, you will find lots of great choices on the menu, especially if you like burgers.
The Officer’s Club is a club sandwich with country ham, turkey, smoked bacon, and cheese on sourdough. Another great choice is the C-47, which is chicken fried chicken that has a scratch-made white gravy on top. Mess Hall Meatloaf is a true 1950s classic.
One thing you don’t want to forget is a cold drink.
You’ll find the normal options here, along with some great shakes and malts. The Strawberry Malt is excellent. What’s great is that they use locally made ice cream for all of their cold items – and that includes the luscious banana split (you have to get it to try it).
Our kids love to get sundaes with a choice of toppings or, more of a nostalgic option, go with the float. Choose a soda (A&W Root Bee or my son loves the Orange Crush) with ice cream in it.
Local Tips
- As its name states, The Airport Diner is by the airport. Ask for a window seat to watch the planes!
- We like to visit after spending the day at the Fredericksburg Nature Center or walking around Lake Bird Johnson Municipal Park.
- If this is your first visit, plan to take a few photos outside in front of the vintage airplane that’s just used for decoration and education (it doesn’t fly, but it is very cool!)
- If you really want to eat a bit healthier, you can do so with the Corsair, a piece of grilled chicken on top of mixed greens with cheese. Other salad options are available, too.
