About

As you enter the city of St. Augustine, the "oldest city in the U.S," you will drive over the Bridge of Lions! This ornate and vintage style bridge was built in the mid 1920s in order to connect Anastasia Island to downtown St. Augustine. The original plans for the bridge are considered a failure due to a real estate boom that halted construction. However, since its completion in 1927, it has been an iconic landmark of historic St. Augustine.

Visitors and locals alike love to stroll along the mile long bridge for the incredible views. No matter where you stand or where you look, the view is breathtaking (pro tip: it's especially beautiful at sunset).

As you can guess by the photos, the bridge gets its name from the original and iconic white marble lion statues on the West side. These lions are symbolic of protectors of the bridge. Their names are Fiel and Firme which means Faithful and Firm. In addition, two lion statues were donated to the East side in 2015. The new lions were named Pax and Peli for Peace and Happiness.

In conclusion, if you're coming to St. Augustine, you are guaranteed to drive over the bridge. We recommend carving out some extra time to walk on the bridge and learn about its rich history!
