About
Birria tacos' are a hot commodity nowadays, growing in popularity over the past few years! They are a traditional Mexican dish that is typically made with goat or beef. The meat is slow-cooked in a broth made with a variety of spices, and the tacos are served with lemon or lime juice and a fiery salsa made with chiles de arbol. Birria tacos are said to have originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and they are now a popular street food dish all over Mexico.
If you have not yet tried Birria tacos, a visit to Birrieria los Mezquites is in order! They are delicious and have become one of my favorite taco options. Friendly reminder: Birria tacos are a little messy to eat, but that's all part of the experience, and the flavor is worth it. It gets a little messy because these are enjoyed by dipping your tacos in the provided broth. My mouth is watering just thinking about it... enjoy!
Environment
This famous birrieria is a great place to take groups due to its capacity and plenty of seating. It will not feel crowded at all and the staff are incredibly charming, hardworking people who will surely take great care of you. The birrieria almost gives you the feel of being in a big traditional Mexican hacienda. The food is authentic and the atmosphere is perfect. The tables are located in the middle of an old hacienda, and it is surrounded by Mezquites trees. This gives the place a traditional Mexican feel and also gives you an idea of where the inspiration for their restaurant name came from.
Mezquite is an endemic tree of the area, which can live up to 800 years, and is only found in the states of Sonora and Baja California in Mexico, as well as in Arizona and California in the United States. Since this place is surrounded by Mesquite trees that provide shade to the tables, you can be in the open listening to the birds singing but protect yourself from the intense heat of Peñasco due to the mezquite trees around.
While visiting the restaurant you will notice their menu is small, but surprisingly sufficient. They offer goat and beef tacos, a variety of drinks, including aguas frescas and sodas. Additionally, for those of you with a sweet tooth, you can choose from a variety of homemade Mexican desserts including flan, lemon carlota, and arroz con leche.
