Red River

Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, Red River offers an authentic, high-altitude mountain retreat. Families and visitors of all ages quickly discover that Red River is one of those places where traditions are made year after year. People travel to Red River for its easily accessible year-round outdoor recreation and family-friendly atmosphere.

At an altitude of 8,750 feet, this iconic mountain town began as a bustling mining camp in the late 19th century, drawing prospectors searching for gold, silver, and copper. When the mining boom faded, the area transitioned into a popular mountain resort destination, maintaining its rustic frontier charm while catering to modern outdoor enthusiasts.

Winter months in Red River are perfect for those looking to ski, snowboard, or snowmobile through fresh powder. Plus, this is when tubing and snow-filled adventures take center stage. As an all-weather, all-season alpine getaway, summers in Red River are just as special. Ride the scenic chairlift for a sweeping view of Carson National Forest up to Summit Camp, enjoy go-karting, fishing, festivals, and of course, a stop at the local candy shop.

Ideal summer weather is perfect for off-roading, horseback riding, and fly fishing in the cool alpine streams. Fall brings beautiful autumn colors, making September and October excellent times for scenic drives and quiet hikes before the winter snow arrives.

Whether you seek a snowy adventure or a warm summer getaway, the historic mountain town of Red River delivers lasting memories for the whole family.
