About

The Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum is instantly recognizable, with its red-and-white tower resembling an enormous candy cane.

Completed in 1970, this iconic red-and-white striped, octagonal tower features 114 steps leading to a top-level gallery with panoramic views of Calibogue Sound.

Unlike old lighthouses built to steer ships away from danger, this one was designed to draw them in. Let us explain. Charles E. Fraser, the developer behind Sea Pines Plantation, envisioned blending architecture with the island's natural beauty. The result is the hexagonal design and signature stripes that catch the eye and capture the imagination.

Over time, the lighthouse became a centerpiece for the Harbour Town marina, serving as a welcoming landmark and observation deck. From atop the 90' building, you have panoramic views of Calibogue Sound and the rich Lowcountry scenery all around.

In 2009, the lighthouse gained a new role as a museum, adding exhibits that engage young and old alike. A prime example is the exhibits found along the 114 steps, where each landing features a period of history to discover. Continue your history lesson at the nearby Stoney Baynard Ruins, a once regal antebellum plantation. It is also home to ghost stories and attracts those curious about paranormal activity.

Another convenient sightseeing attraction is the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. This 605-acre park offers trails, boardwalks across wetlands, wildlife, fishing, and guided boat tours and horseback rides.

After burning calories climbing those lighthouse steps, head to The Salty Dog Cafe to refuel and refresh. The original 1987 eatery is at the South Beach Marina, offering ice-cold drinks and classic American favorites.

Discover for yourself why the Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum is as synonymous with HHI as golf is! Adding it to your itinerary is a must!

Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum: Fun Facts & Cool Features

As mentioned, the attraction's ingenious feature is the exhibits you'll discover by climbing the 114 steps to the platform. You'll learn about Hilton Head Island's history at each stop, from Native American roots and Civil War events to how Gullah culture shaped the island. These mini-museums make the climb engaging and give you an excuse to stop for a breather!

The lighthouse also features an official Coast Guard-approved beacon. Even though it wasn't built for guiding ships, its light flashes every 2.5 seconds, sending a real signal across the water.

Speaking of the Coast Guard, take time to peruse the museum section honoring these brave men and women. From memorabilia, model replicas, and timeless photographs, you'll come away with a better understanding of the Coast Guard's missions and milestones throughout the years.

At the summit, the "Shop at the Top" delivers a rare treat: the only gift shop located at the top of a lighthouse. It offers local memorabilia and unique souvenirs, allowing every visitor to remember the experience.

Still, the main draw is the 360-degree view. From the top, you'll see the busy marina, the Harbour Town Golf Links famous 18th hole, distant Daufuskie Island, and the open waters of Calibogue Sound.

A trip to the Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum brings history, culture, and sweeping scenery together. A visit will be a highlight of any Palmetto State vacation.
