About

For an immersive experience filled with history and natural wonders, visit the Coastal Discovery Museum. Since opening in 1985, it has grown from a small initiative into a 70-acre destination that blends history, art, and nature.

What started in a modest storefront found its permanent home in 2007, thanks to the vision of its founders and the support of the local community. Even the museum's location, the Honey Horn property, is historic, dating back over 300 years.

Today, as a Smithsonian Affiliate, Coastal Discovery Museum welcomes over 130,000 visitors each year. The grounds have scenic trails, marshes, gardens, and historic buildings. While you may explore on your own, they also offer guided tours that add depth to your visit.

From boardwalks into the marsh to a pavilion for picnics and weddings, to the gardens and exhibits, this attraction has something for every age and interest. A prime example is the Carnivorous Plants Bog Garden, home to native insect-eating plants found in the Lowcountry, including Venus flytraps, Sundews, and several species of Pitcher plants. Learning about each plant's unique method of trapping insects will spark your family's curiosity.

Coastal Discovery Museum's proximity to the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island makes it easy to visit both attractions and become fully immersed in the history of this fascinating people group. Also convenient is Fish Haul Beach Park overlooking Port Royal Sound. This quiet getaway is perfect for walking, bird watching, and relaxing.

Take a break from the beaches and golf courses and learn about the cultures, the landscapes, and the wildlife that call HHI home.

Coastal Discovery Museum: Fun Facts & Cool Features

A photo-worthy highlight is the 68-acre Honey Horn property. The expansive property features Spanish-moss-laden oaks and marsh grasses stretching out to tidal streams. Three boardwalks wind through the salt marshes, complete with signs explaining the ecosystem's importance.

When visiting South Carolina in May through October, make a beeline for the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat. The greenhouse garden is home to native butterflies and the plants they need to thrive. As the butterflies flutter, you'll learn about their life cycle in a colorful and delightful setting.

History hounds will want to explore Inside the Discovery House. Here, exhibits explain Hilton Head's history, from its plantation days to its transformation into a resort destination.

The Gullah culture exhibits are also noteworthy, offering a glimpse into the traditions and resilience of this unique community. Equally engaging are the outdoor sculptures and murals. Walter Palmer's bronze statues grace the acreage, adding an artistic touch to this Lowcountry attraction.

If you're traveling with children, check out the Kids Zone! This interactive space is jam-packed with artifacts, live critters, and hands-on activities that keep young minds engaged. The museum also offers programs like the Marsh Tacky horse encounters and the Blue Crab Discovery Tour, which add even more excitement to your visit.

After working up an appetite exploring this attraction, you're never far from a delicious meal. Continue your study of art and culture with a meal at The Jazz Corner. As an internationally-celebrated jazz club and top-notch restaurant, it offers the perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Visiting the Coastal Discovery Museum is a chance to connect with the Lowcountry's history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're walking the trails, exploring the butterfly habitat, or learning about the island's past, it's an experience that adds depth to any trip to Hilton Head.
