The Jazz Corner

About

When restaurants offer live music, they typically fall into one of two categories. The first are those where the music is amateurish, but the food is rewarding, or the second, where the music is outstanding but the fare is subpar. The Jazz Corner offers a third option, featuring international and regional premier jazz pros alongside Southern-inspired cuisine that will delight all epicureans.

The vision came from Bob Masteller, a talented jazz musician, and his wife, Lois. Bob sought to create a setting and vibe like the jazz clubs he experienced in the Northeast. Bob intentionally designed the club's acoustics for a clear, intimate sound. The result is that there's "not a bad seat in the house" without overpowering dinner conversation.

When The Jazz Corner opened in The Village at Wexford in 1999, it raised the bar for live entertainment on HHI. Such an accomplishment was due to Bob's ability to book the renowned George Shearing Quintet for a week. Needless to say, the club was an overnight success.

When Bob passed, his son, Dave, picked up the torch. Today, The Jazz Corner hosts international, national, and regional talent in its quaint setting.

Equally rewarding is the menu. Like jazz, it's a medley of classics and artisan influences that create soul-satisfying deliciousness.

Centrally located, it's easy to combine a day of sightseeing with a night of cool jazz. For instance, after a day of sun and surf at Coligny Beach Park or Burkes Beach, celebrate with an evening of entertainment and savory food.

Vibe

While its name evokes images of a dark, smoky New York City jazz club with a vibrant neon sign, quite the opposite awaits. Due to architectural requirements and HHI restrictions, the building at The Village blends into its surroundings. While it is in a corner and certainly eye-appealing, you may wonder whether The Jazz Corner is the real deal when it comes to music and food. Trust us, it is!

Step inside, and this timeless jazz venue takes over. Low lighting, polished woodwork, and artwork adorn the walls. The main attraction is the stage, featuring a baby grand and a Gretsch drum kit. On any particular night, these are joined by an upright bass, horns, and other instruments.

Tables allow everyone to enjoy the great acoustics with a view of the performance. The bar offers a more low-key experience.

The Jazz Corner's thoughtful layout, superb acoustics, and vibrant energy set the scene for a South Carolina night you'll remember.

The Jazz Corner: Menu & Drinks

The Beginnings section of the menu sets the stage with palate-pleasing starters. A prime example is the Apple Cranberry Baked Brie with walnuts and a toasted baguette. It's the perfect combination of tart and sweet with the buttery texture of the brie.

The Fried Green Tomato Salad features spinach, arugula, radicchio, and applewood smoked bacon. Add the gorgonzola cheese and creamy herb vinaigrette, and it's the perfect meal after a horseback ride at Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

Moving to the Mains, the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin is a must-try. A dried, sweet blueberry demi-glace is the perfect complement to the salty bacon and tenderloin. The meal also comes with spiced peach butter, sweet potato puree, and edamame succotash.

Seafood lovers will want to try the Prosciutto Wrapped Jumbo Scallops. The latter showcases locally caught scallops wrapped in prosciutto and grilled in a sweet brown butter sauce. It comes with a pear-and-apricot chutney, Boursin Carolina Gold risotto, and crispy kale.

Alongside the food, the drink list is a high note. The wine offerings are well-matched to the menu's flavors, while creative cocktails and classics are crafted with premium spirits.

This blend of food and drink creates an experience that's more than dinner or a show—here, it's all one performance.
