About
Where can you go for world-class Southern comfort food, live music, and a family-friendly vibe? The answer: A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant!
What sets this hotspot apart is its unique history. Our story begins in 1977 when Dave Peck moved here with his family as a boy. He enjoyed oyster roasts on the May River, cookouts in the Lowcountry, and fishing with Gullah friends, whose food traditions shaped his taste buds.
Fast-forward to Dave, married to Raina Peck, who envisioned opening a restaurant showcasing the food from his childhood. With the help of Chef Mike Chapman, this vision became a reality in 2013 when A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant opened.
The dynamic trio focused on traditional preparation methods and sourcing local ingredients. Using family and Gullah recipes, they curated a menu showcasing staples such as shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and Lowcountry boils.
Even its name, "A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant," captures the relaxed, inviting atmosphere they sought to cultivate. It speaks to a setting where hospitality is paramount, and comfort food is on point.
Convenient to Coligny Beach Park and Folly Field Beach Park, the restaurant is the ideal spot to refuel, relax, and seek refreshment.
Be sure to include this regional favorite on your HHI getaway to savor the South's best flavors.
Vibe
A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant resembles a classic Southern home, painted in warm, inviting colors with a welcoming garden area.
Lush greenery and native plants enhance the feeling of arriving at a private retreat rather than a commercial establishment. String lights draped across the backyard patio create an enchanting atmosphere.
The interior is cozy and intimate, with wooden tables, mismatched chairs, local art, and vintage memorabilia.
The most popular dining spot is the backyard garden. Here, umbrella-covered tables, a quaint gazebo for live music, and lush vegetation make for a relaxing, invigorating dining experience.
These elements combine to offer a family-friendly, relaxing dining experience.
A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant: Menu & Drinks
Okay, let's cut to the chase: the Gullah-inspired shrimp and grits! This comfort meal has been voted the best in South Carolina and showcases wild-caught shrimp sautéed with smoked sausage, onions, and sweet peppers. Add the creamy, stone-ground grits, and you'll discover why it's a winner!
Backing up a step, the starters offer tantalizing options you can combine to create a tapas-like dining experience. Case in point is the Tomato Stack, showcasing fried green tomatoes, homemade ranch dressing, and sweet pickles. Also noteworthy is the May River Blue Crab Dip, which is warm and creamy, with assorted cheeses and lump crab meat. It comes with grilled flatbread and tortilla chips, making it an irresistible appetizer.
The sandwich selection is impressive, offering various bread choices with sweet pickles and one side. From locally inspired burgers to fried green tomatoes and even tofu, there's a handheld for even the pickiest eaters.
Jumping to the Lowcountry Favorites, aside from the shrimp and grits, check out the Lowcountry Boil. You'll feast on 1 lb. of fresh-caught shrimp, smoked sausage, corn on the cob, fried potatoes, seasonal crab, and seasoned with Old Bay Butter. This hearty meal serves two, but you can order a smaller quantity.
Celebrate your round of golf at the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Golf Course with one of the Southern-inspired cocktails. The Lowcountry Sunset features bourbon, peach schnapps, sweet tea, and lemonade. It's like an Arnold Palmer, only for adults! The beer and wine list, while limited, pairs well with the menu offerings. Kids will love the soft drinks, milks, teas, and juices.
