About

Looking to explore notable architecture in downtown Columbia, SC? Be sure to plan a visit to the Robert Mills House & Gardens, which is also home to an immaculate public garden. As one of only five National Historic Landmarks in the city, the home operates as a historic house museum, featuring period rooms and focus galleries that highlight decorative arts from the late 18th through mid-19th centuries.

The home’s name pays tribute to architect Robert Mills, who designed prominent buildings in the nation, including the Washington Monument. Originally conceived as a private residence, the Classical Revival mansion was completed in 1823. Curiously, it was never used as a home but instead as a campus for three different religious schools.

The gardens surrounding the home are unique as they combine an English Formal design with plant species native to the eastern U.S. In contrast to other homes preserved by Historic Columbia, the Robert Mills House did not originally feature ornamental gardens. This was due in part to its use as an educational facility for many years.

After rescuing the home from demolition, in 1961 the organization installed gardens in a style that likely would have been to the enjoyment of the site’s first owner, Ainlsey Hall. Today, the pristine gardens feature open, naturalistic spaces with large canopy trees and masterfully clipped hedges.

Located within walking distance of the Columbia Museum of Art, it’s easy to plan a day to explore history and art just off Main Street in the heart of Columbia.

Robert Mills House & Gardens: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Remarkably, this historic architectural masterpiece was once abandoned and on the verge of demolition in 1960. Preservation efforts led to the creation of the Historic Columbia group, which now operates tours at the home.

A remarkable feature of the gardens themselves is the space is open to the public and operates its own daily hours. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy the lush green space in the middle of the city. Order to-go at Market on Main and enjoy a picnic under the amazing green canopy at the garden.

The house itself is one of the few remaining structures personally designed by Robert Mills. This gives the home immense historical significance. Its symmetrical design, large floor-to-ceiling windows, and elegant columns reflect a sense of balance and refinement characteristic of Mills' Federal style.

A visit to the Robert Mills House & Gardens is a chance to appreciate both architectural mastery, natural beauty, and a glimpse at history.

From its historical importance to its artistic detailing, the site highlights why Columbia, South Carolina, is a destination for culture and history enthusiasts alike.
