Hugging the banks of the Saluda River just west of downtown Columbia, the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden offers an unparalleled blend of nature, wildlife, and captivating scenery. Not only is this one of the city’s top destinations, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Sites since 1973.

Opened to the public in 1974, the zoo is now home to over 3,000 animals across 170-acres filled with dynamic natural habitats, spectacular overlooks, scenic river views, and historic landmarks. 

Visitors will also enjoy several rides and interactive attractions within the zoo. Climb aboard the Riverbanks Express through the zoo, or enjoy a bird’s-eye view from the Sky-High Safari. There are also opportunities to take part in animal feedings; be sure to check availability. Additionally, the Riverbanks Backstage program provides a chance to look at animal care, meet some of the zoo’s residents, and learn more about the zoo's efforts to protect endangered species. 

The zoo is conveniently located to popular city landmarks, such as the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park, just over the Broad River bridge. The whole family can easily enjoy a day of excitement by pairing a visit to the zoo with EdVenture, wrapping up the evening over a meal at Market on Main.

Getting There  

Here are step-by-step driving directions from downtown Columbia to Riverbanks Zoo & Garden: 

  • From downtown Columbia, start on Gervais Street heading west.
  • Cross the Congaree River via the Gervais Street Bridge.
  • Continue until you reach Greystone Boulevard and turn right.
  • Follow Greystone Boulevard to the entrance.
  • Address: 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC 29210.
