About

Big T's Bar-B-Que has been a culinary destination in Columbia, South Carolina, and the surrounding areas, for more than thirty years. The restaurant was founded by Larry “Big T” (Teddy) Brown, a dedicated pitmaster whose name has come to represent real South Carolina barbecue.

The well-known flagship Gadsden location provides the perfect BBQ stop after a day of exploring Congaree National Park. Over the years, the restaurant has expanded to include more locations in Columbia, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

For over three decades, Big T´s Bar-B-Que has expertly shared the founder’s passion for slow-cooked barbecue. Barbecue lovers soon took notice of his skill and the unassuming pit house in Gadsden, boosting its popularity in the area.

The flagship BBQ cornerstone is located about half an hour from Columbia. However, with an additional location on Garners Ferry Road, you can also satiate your BBQ cravings on the way to a Gamecocks game at Williams-Brice Stadium.

When you’re looking for South Carolina BBQ at its finest, look no further than Big T’s Bar-B-Que on your Columbia getaway.

Vibe

The down-home atmosphere at the restaurant’s original location in Gadsden welcomes diners with an unassuming and unpretentious exterior. The building reflects classic Southern charm with its modest brick structure and simple signage. There is ample parking out front, providing an opportunity to just come right on in.

Inside, the setup is casual and filled with several booths for seating. Diners make their way to the counter to place orders. Keep in mind, you may find a line going out the door during peak hours.

The overall feel at the restaurant is family-friendly and laid-back. With a spotlight shining on the food, the setting provides a comfortable community space.

Big T’s Bar-B-Que: Menu & Drinks

The restaurant, which is an ongoing family-run business, is known for its tradition of slow-hickory-smoked pork shoulders. A specialty of the Midlands region of South Carolina, Big T’s Bar-B-Que shoulders are cooked in a burn barrel over hot coals made from wood embers and finished with a tart, mustard-based barbecue sauce.

Another item the restaurant is famously known for is their barbecue hash. This South Carolina original is sometimes described as “pork gravy”, more so than a traditional hash. It is akin to a thick, meaty stew served over rice.

For those who crave crispy and golden delights, Big T’s also serves succulent fried chicken baskets. Speaking of baskets, diners can choose from pork chops to shrimp, as well as crispy fish alternatives.

Round out the meal with one of Big T’s signature sides. Their classic Southern sides include cracklins, creamy mac-n-cheese, as well as collard and mustard greens. Be sure to ask for the cracklin' corn bread to go with your meal. You’re welcome.

Big T’s serves up beverages to complement their savory offerings. Sweet tea is a staple here, along with fresh lemonade. As a casual eatery, there is also an assortment of traditional soft drinks.

Dining at Big T’s Bar-B-Que is a dining celebration for the senses and the entire family. It is a prime example of South Carolina’s unique, original, and excellent Cuisine. Be sure to make this a stop on any visit to Columbia, SC, and its lush surroundings.
