About

While there are plenty of Coachella Valley fine dining restaurants, one stands above the others: Wally’s Desert Turtle in Rancho Mirage.

Restaurateur Wally Botello founded this regional hotspot in 1978. As the creative mind behind the Velvet Turtle restaurant chain, he envisioned the Desert Turtle as his ultimate culinary masterpiece.

To bring this vision to life, Botello partnered with renowned designer Steven Chase, who created a space that blends classic elegance with modern sophistication. The restaurant’s décor, featuring antique furnishings and artwork from around the world, still reflects this timeless design.

After Wally Botello passed away in 1985, his son Michael Botello took over, continuing to build on the restaurant’s reputation as a premier dining destination.

Over the years, Wally’s Desert Turtle has welcomed an impressive list of guests, including Frank Sinatra, President Gerald Ford, and Tom Hanks. Today, the legacy Michael’s daughter, Madalyn Botello, carries the torch, bringing a fresh perspective while honoring the restaurant’s time-honored history.

Its central location makes it easy to pair a sightseeing itinerary with a gourmet meal. After a rousing game at Indian Wells Tennis Garden or a challenging day on the PGA WEST Greg Norman Golf Course, refresh and celebrate at Wally’s Desert Turtle.

Discover for yourself why this 45-year culinary dynasty remains a cornerstone of the Coachella Valley dining scene. Savor exquisite California cuisine, impeccable service, and a storied heritage.

Vibe

The modern exterior resembles a contemporary museum, with clean architectural lines, a lack of front windows, and multicolored stonework. The stately wall sign and lush greenery hint at the refined experience waiting inside.

The décor blends timeless luxury and modern refinement. The main dining area sports a stained concrete coffered ceiling for a modern vibe. Mirrored columns, crystal chandeliers, and plush seating create a sense of opulence, while curated artwork and antique furnishings add character, warmth, and charm.

Soft lighting and gentle background music set the tone for an intimate and relaxing dining experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or enjoying a quiet evening out, the ambiance feels just right.

The dining areas offer guests cozy booths, elegant table settings, or the lively bar area. For private events, the Mirage Room offers a candlelit space with an indoor-outdoor flow, perfect for creating unforgettable memories.

In short, the ambiance captures the essence of a luxurious California getaway.

Wally’s Desert Turtle: Menu & Drinks

The menus celebrate California cuisine, crafted with locally sourced ingredients and a touch of culinary artistry. Such dedication is noticeable in starters like the Pan-Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes. These mouthwatering appetizers come with fennel slaw and whole-grain mustard sauce.

A Wally’s favorite that is also gluten-free is the Escargots of Burgundy. The escargot are presented in the shell, making for an elegant appetizer.

One of the most talked-about dishes is the Whole Imported Dover Sole, prepared tableside with precision and flair. The chef can prepare the seafood in the Meunière style, where the fish is flour-dredged and cooked in brown butter with lemon juice and parsley. You may also have the fish cooked Amandine, with sliced almonds coating the fish. Additionally, the meal comes with mashed potatoes and grilled jumbo asparagus.

Sometimes, all you need is a burger, and Wally’s Smash Burger definitely delivers. This handheld features two 4-oz Wagyu Patties with caramelized onions, American Cheese, and Wally’s House Sauce. Add the side of truffle fries, and you have a soul-satisfying comfort meal.

For a unique dining experience, check out the Friday Fashion Show Lunch. You’ll dine and sip on some of Wally’s favorites while watching models showcase apparel and jewelry from local boutiques.

The drink menu is just as impressive, featuring expertly crafted cocktails and an extensive wine list. Whether you order a martini or a bottle of wine, your drink pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s sophisticated dishes.

Wally’s Desert Turtle’s combination of exquisite food, exceptional drinks, and an elegant setting ensures a memorable evening on your California getaway.
