About

Not far from Atlantic Beach is a community known as Down East that celebrates the coastal waters. Located in Core Sound, it's a place where fishermen, decoy carvers, and families who made their living from the sea thrived. Now, you explore this marvelous culture at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center.

For years, folks along Core Sound saw change coming and rallied to protect their lifestyle. After hosting the first Waterfowl Weekend festival in 1988, the idea took hold of creating a permanent home to celebrate their history.

By 1992, the idea had become a reality with the official formation of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. This initiative was made possible by locals donating land, raising funds, and constructing the facility themselves.

Even the structure's design reflects the community's maritime history as local fish houses and life-saving stations inspired it.

Inside is a treasure trove of exhibits offering a firsthand account of the people's history. You'll discover many hand-carved duck decoys, each one crafted from years of skill and deep knowledge of local birds. While these are eye-catching works of art, they demonstrate a skill that has been passed down from generation to generation.

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center is a short drive from Beaufort, North Carolina. Such convenience enables you to plan a sightseeing itinerary rich with attractions. For instance, before or after visiting this landmark, check out the Rachel Carson Reserve to explore the area's ecosystems. Visit the North Carolina Maritime Museum to continue learning about the Crystal Coast's history.

Aside from learning about Down East history, you'll be immersed in its laid-back coastal living. All of which makes visiting a treat on your North Carolina getaway.

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum: Fun Facts & Cool Features

There's more to the waterfowl decoys than being folk art. For generations, Core Sound residents relied on the decoys for hunting and sustenance. As time passed, younger generations lost interest in this wood carving tradition. The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center sought to counter this erosion of a time-honored tradition.

The galleries showcase this preservation as you'll see classic and modern decoys, each shaped by hand and unique to its maker. It's easy to imagine the carvers at work, choosing wood, studying the birds, and shaping every detail to honor both tradition and the natural world.

Another appealing part of a visit is the workshops, artist demonstrations, and classes. These offer a hands-on way to learn about carving, boat building, and other historic skills. Events like the Gathering of the Guilds bring together local craftspeople who share techniques and stories.

Its location at the tip of Harkers Island Road is another reason to visit. You'll have expansive views of Core Sound, nearby barrier islands, and Cape Lookout Lighthouse. When planning your visit to the museum, be sure to factor in time to explore the light station and its lovely beach.

For the ultimate sightseeing adventure, make a reservation at a Beaufort restaurant to celebrate your day of discovery. The Blue Moon Bistro serves modern French cuisine in a restored historic home. Take your taste buds to Asia with a meal at Viet Street Eats. From noodles to Vietnamese sandwiches and pho, this laid-back restaurant will satisfy any appetite.

Adding a visit to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum brings a new perspective to any trip to the Crystal Coast. Here, history and culture provide a unique perspective on life on the coast.
