About
For anyone that loves the game of disc golf, Snowshoe Mountain is the perfect place to engage in it. Now, when we visited, this certainly was not the only thing we did, but it was a lot of fun and definitely worth the experience. It's also far more challenging than you think it is. Even if you think you are a hole-in-one on a championship golf course, the Fairy Diddle Disc Golf course is going to challenge you!
The entire process is like playing golf, but the game is done by throwing objects toward an elevated "hole." It's quite an impressive game, but you'll need some time to master it. It's definitely a good way to spend the morning or afternoon after you have enjoyed other activities.
At Snowshoe Mountain, the Fairy Diddle Disc Golf course is a full 18 holes. It is just off the shore at Shaver's Lake, which means you can easily do this when you need a break from the water fun. You don't have to be super experienced to play, and it's easy enough to learn if you are planning your first time. Still, for those who have some experience, it's not boring.
One of the things they tell you while playing the game is that you have to watch out for little creatures in the trees. Now, while we were out there, we didn't see any type of fairies, but we were looking and definitely saw a lot of wildlife around every bend. It's fun to look around and almost feel as though someone was in the woods, tucked behind a tree watching you. It's all in fun, but it's also an outstanding way to have the kids looking around, trying to spot the diddle fairies, as they call them.
Snowshoe Disc Golfing
The Snowshoe Mountain area is pretty big. Once you get to this area, you will want to use the Backcountry trail to reach the Shaver's Lake area. The Fairy Diddle Disc Golf is located right next to the lake in the wooded areas. There are two options for getting to this area. The first – and the one we recommend, is to follow the Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail. You will head south on Snowshoe Drive for less than a mile. This takes you to the Top of the World area. From there, you'll follow the trail to the south of Soaring Eagle Lodge. You can also descend the Ballhooter Chairlift. If you want a view, this is the route to take.
You can also drive north along Snowshoe Drive for about 2 miles. Then, you'll want to turn onto Shavers Lake Road. Follow the roadway down, and you'll eventually reach a parking lot.
The Course at Fairy Diddle
There are some pretty fun aspects of the Fairy Diddle Disc Golf Course. The first nine holes are all within a dense, pretty forest area. It's a nice way to step into the shade on a hot day and still do something fun. I found through these initial nine holes that the trees do play a role in whether or not you hit your market. The throwing lanes are a bit more challenging as a result, but not impossible by any means. You will find that the first nine are just as fun, though, as everyone playing will have a different result.
The second nine holes are more open and considered longer fairways. If you play the game, you know these can be pretty intense as well. However, the area is more wide open and creates different advantages for players. It is almost as if you are playing two different courses.
Snowshoe Disc Golfing Cost & Info
The cost of playing Fair Diddle Disc Golf is really just about paying to get into the Snowshoe Mountain area. You will need to cover the cost of entrance and getting to this area, but of course, you are not paying just for the disc golf but everything else there is to do here. We live nearby, so we have a Summer Fun Pass. You can also purchase a daily lift ticket to gain access to the area.
There's no booking of a time to play. It's just taking your turn when the course is available while everyone else is at the lake. However, you can pick up a disc if you do not have one. These are located at the Lake Outpost. I definitely recommend stopping in and talking to those working there. They have some great tips on how to make the most out of your experience.
Don't take yourself too seriously here. The game is lots of fun, and everyone is new at it. You don't have to be a pro, and even if you are a golf pro, those skills may not translate into disc golf as easily.
