Overton Park

Established in 1901, the greenspace was named after John Overton, a founder of Memphis. The park's historical significance is tied to the civil rights movement and was the site of the pivotal Supreme Court case Citizens to Preserve Overton Park v. Volpe. The decision upheld the preservation of the park over highway expansion plans in 1971.

As we alluded to, there is something for everyone at the park. An example is the Overton Park Shell amphitheater, established in 1936. Here, an up-and-coming singer had his first paid performance. That moment in 1954 launched Elvis Presley's career to meteoric heights. The Shell faced its challenges, underwent a renovation, and even a name change in 2005. In 2022, the original moniker returned, and the Shell continues to attract music and art fans nationwide. 

Your kids will want to spend time at the Rainbow Lake Playground. This kid-friendly wonderland features colorful play structures that will entertain and amaze them for hours on end. From swings, slides, and a rope course, there's something for every age. 

The Greensward is another highlight, offering open spaces for picnicking, kite flying, or lounging under the sun. Golfers will enjoy the 9-hole, par-34 public course that weaves through the park's old-growth forest.

The aforementioned 2,275-yard golf course is a plus. It was redesigned and rebuilt by the renowned golf architecture firm King Collins, and it weaves through the park's historic old-growth forest. Unlike many municipal courses, Overton's features unique holes that will challenge players of all levels.

Nature thrives in the Old Forest Arboretum, where over 170 bird species and native flora create a lush sanctuary for walkers and joggers. Family-friendly tours, such as the Twilight Hike, offer insights into the park after sunset. Be sure to bring a flashlight and bug spray!

While visiting Overton Park and the Old Forest Arboretum trails, Rainbow Lake Playground and the Greensward are free to access, while other attractions have admission fees. Here's what you can expect:
