About Greensboro, Georgia

A small town located in Greene County, Greensboro, Georgia, is an ideal place to call home for many people. There are a lot of reasons to visit, too, including the beautiful landscape and its easy-to-reach location right between Atlanta and Augusta along I-20. Spanning about 7 square miles and home to over 3,600 people, Greensboro is a true small town. It is also an old city, founded in 1786.

Greensboro is on Lake Oconee, but what many people first notice about the area is its historic buildings and beautiful parks, especially in the downtown area. There are numerous shops here, including those with jewelry and gifts. It’s not uncommon for people to visit to do some antiquing either.

Still, for many, the main reason to visit is to enjoy the lake itself. The lake is a reservoir that sits on the Oconee River and was built in 1979 after the construction of the Wallace Dam. It’s close to both Greensboro and Eatonton.

Greensboro is home to a more relaxed way of living, and though there is a significant amount of tourism here, it’s still easy enough to enjoy a relaxed experience no matter when you visit. The area is noted for its history, which is present throughout the downtown area. It played a significant role in the Civil War and helped with the founding of the country. Even though it has a lot of historic charm, the area is still very modern and full of innovative shops and excellent schools.

This area provides a lot of activities for visitors, such as kayaking and canoeing on the waterfront. With over 100 acres of countryside to explore, it’s a great place for long hikes and perhaps a picnic as well. This is a shooting area designed by Justin Jones with 20 station sporting clays course with a five-stand shooting range and a rifle range. There’s also an archery range to try out. For those who want to enjoy golfing, one of the best options in the area is Harbor Club Golf. This award-winning course sits on 1,000 acres of wooded hills. It’s bordered by 9 miles of Lake Oconee. Another option is the Oconee Golf Course. This par-72 course has a sometimes challenging layout but is a stimulating experience that even an advanced golfer could enjoy.

Take in a performance at the Oconee Performing Arts Society, where you will find a wide range of orchestra and band performances happening throughout the year. The Arts Barn is another area.
