About
To fully comprehend and appreciate the lip-smacking fare at Rodney Scott's BBQ, we need to go back to 1972.
In that year, the Scott's Variety Store and Bar-B-Q opened in Hemingway, South Carolina. While Rodney Scott was only eleven, he cooked his first whole hog under the watchful eye of his father. What began as a family business blossomed into a lifelong passion.
What set their BBQ apart was using the traditional method of cooking whole hogs over wood embers. This technique required twelve hours' worth of patience, the precision of a master chef, and the care of a doting parent. The result? Juicy, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth pork!
Rodney's hard work paid off when he joined forces with the Pihakis Restaurant Group. Together, they launched the first Rodney Scott's BBQ in Charleston in 2017. You'll also find locations in Nashville, Tennessee, Homewood and Trussville, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia.
While Lowcountry BBQ is a slow process, recognition for his food came fast. Bon Appétit magazine listed the BBQ joint in its "50 Best New Restaurants in America" list for 2017. In 2018, Rodney Scott received the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast. He is even in the BBQ Hall of Fame.
Located near the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, you're never far from tasty BBQ when exploring Charleston. After touring the historical homes and parks in the Historic Downtown Charleston or after a day at Shem Creek Park in Mount Pleasant, savory barbecue is only minutes away!

Vibe
While many Southern barbecue spots are shacks or rundown joints, Rodney Scott's BBQ sports a hip, contemporary look.
The white-washed brick building showcases an eye-appealing modern sign that, like the food, is simple and to the point. Next door is the restaurant that is also white but with Haint blue trim and matching picnic tables on the front patio.
The interior is a refreshing blend of contemporary and industrial touches. Polished concrete floors, exposed air ducts, and vintage lighting add an industrial feel. Wooden tables and white walls with tasteful photos create a modern yet homey feel.
Whether you prefer dining indoors or outside, Rodney Scott's BBQ works for any vacation in South Carolina. It's a place that invites you to grab a table, settle in, and experience Lowcountry barbecue done right.
Rodney Scott's BBQ: Menu & Drinks
Before we highlight the star of the show–the pulled pork–let's look at other offerings.
For a power-packed lunch or dinner, you can't go wrong with the Loaded Tater Truck. This delicious meal features a baked spud with butter, sour cream, cheddar, bacon, and scallions. Next, top it off with either smoked whole hog, pork shoulder, turkey, or chicken. For an additional cost, make it with beef brisket.
The smoked chicken wings make a great appetizer or can serve as a meal when ordering twelve. The wings come with a dry rub or in a sauce, such as the homemade Alabama White BBQ, Buffalo, or Kathy's BBQ Sauce.
The Smoked Turkey Club sandwich showcases juicy, smoky turkey breast with bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Add the red onion, cheese, honey mustard sauce, and a classic side, and you have a tasty handheld!
Now, let's check out the whole hog options! At the top of the "must-try" list is the Carolina Style Pork. This star entrée features 8 oz. of perfectly seasoned pit-cooked pork with two classic sides and cornbread. What makes it Carolina-style is the vinegar-pepper sauce that the Lowcountry is known for. If you prefer a sweet red sauce, order the Southern Style Pork.
Other smoked meats include chicken, brisket, turkey, and spare ribs. You'll also find combos and family meals, perfect to take back to your Casago rental!
