About

While Santa Barbara and the Central Coast have plenty of landmarks and scenic attractions, some of the area’s most captivating creatures and experiences are found in the Pacific. One such experience is Condor Express Whale Watching, which offers an unmatched opportunity to see whales, dolphins, seals, and orcas!

Starting in the 1970s, local fisherman Fred Benko began mapping out the whale migration along the Central Coast. In 1985, his passion blossomed into a whale-watching business. With his vessel, The Condor, and earning the nickname “the whale whisperer,” Fred shared his love for whales and other marine life with others.

With his wife Hiroko and a new vessel, they launched The Condor Express Whale Watching in 2002. Sadly, Fred passed away in 2013, but Hiroko continues to manage the company, striving to find ways to improve the whale-watching experience.

As one of the most popular whale-watching destinations along the California coast, Condor Express offers the chance to see gray, humpback, and blue whales. Dolphins are also common, often following the craft at sea.

Its central location makes it easy to fill a day with adventure. Walk to the iconic Stearns Wharf, or after whale watching, dine at any of the nearby eateries, like The Palace Grill.

Condor Express Whale Watching combines passion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to conservation, making it a top pick for a Santa Barbara vacation.

Condor Express Whale Watching: Fun Facts & Cool Features

One of the first things visitors wonder is, “What if we don’t see any whales?” While this is rare with Condor Express Whale Watching, they do offer a “whale check” should it happen, which gives you a free trip. Such a guarantee makes for a stress-free booking experience.

Another fantastic feature is that they adhere to strict guidelines to minimize disturbance to marine life. In 2020, the vessel was re-powered with four new energy-efficient 700-horsepower Scania Diesel engines. The craft is propelled by four large Hamilton jets, eliminating propellers and sharp rudders, making it safe for whales and dolphins!

Rest assured that the Condor Express is designed for your comfort and safety. The vessel has a full galley with breakfast and lunch menus and a full bar. Three restrooms and a teak-paneled cabin with large viewing windows enhance the trip.

The 71-foot boat has the latest safety features, while the twin hull and hydrofoil wing provide a smooth voyage. Add the captain, two crew members, and a speaker system surrounding the boat so you always hear what the captain says, and you’re in for a delightful sightseeing voyage!

Another remarkable aspect is the onboard hydrophones, which allow passengers to listen to whale songs. This added dimension enriches the experience, making it educational, exciting, and entertaining.

Condor Express Whale Watching also offers party cruises ranging from Fourth of July Celebration to Opera and Broadway excursions. And for those special moments, you can book a private charter accommodating 127 passengers.

A trip aboard Condor Express Whale Watching is an adventure that leaves lasting memories on a Central Coast getaway.
