The best time to visit North Lake Tahoe depends on your favorite activities. Winter generally brings heavy snowfall so the months between December and March are prime time for skiing and snowboarding. Summer stretches from June through August, with warm weather that is perfect for boating, swimming, and hiking along the inspiring shoreline.
Winter: For winter adventures and snowy family fun, North Lake Tahoe offers incredible cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating for everyone in the group. Experience the starry night with a Moonlight Snowshoe Tour, or the annual family-friendly North Lake Tahoe SNOWFEST.
Spring/Fall: And if you're more of a spring and fall traveler, we’ve got you covered. Shirley Canyon Trail located in Palisades Tahoe offers one of the best half-day hikes around. With dog-friendly trails, waterfalls, and granite boulders there’s no lack of beauty. Or for a family day of hiking, Eagle Rock Hiking Trails offers an easy incline to an incredible view. And with ample mountain biking trails all throughout North Lake Tahoe, you’ll have plenty to keep you exploring.
Summer: Finally, if summer calls to your soul and you crave water adventures North Lake Tahoe offers a ton of summer activities for everyone in your group. From boating to paddle boarding, fishing, and relaxing on the beach, you’ll have over 1,600 feet of lakefront to explore including some unique fresh-water beaches.
Lastly as the day winds down, and the sun begins to set, Christy Hill offers a breathtaking sunset view of the lake—sitting 100 feet above the lake’s shoreline. And as North Lake Tahoe’s premier dining experience, this sweet spot is anything but stuffy! This incredible dining experience is a must-do to end your day!
Visitors often wonder about the distinct vibes, activities, and amenities of these two regions. North Lake Tahoe is typically described as more laid-back, focusing on outdoor activities and natural beauty. In contrast, South Lake Tahoe has a lively town atmosphere with a mix of nature and entertainment, including casinos on the Nevada side.
Given its proximity, many visitors to North Lake Tahoe fly into Reno. The distance from Reno-Tahoe International Airport to North Lake Tahoe is approximately 40 miles, which is about a 45-minute drive without traffic.
Throughout the year, this picturesque region comes alive with music, festivities, sports competitions, and community gatherings.
