Truckee

Sitting at around 5,900 feet in California’s majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, the small mountain town of Truckee is a tried and true launching point for visitors to Lake Tahoe. Surrounded by towering pine forests and granite peaks, Truckee’s walkable historic downtown - boasting all locally owned shops - provides a charming backdrop to experience the town’s palpable mountain spirit.

Given its proximity to numerous ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe, as well as pristine hiking trails, water rafting adventures, and nearly a dozen golf courses, Truckee provides a year-round outdoor playground for visitors of all ages. Cozy up in a mountain cabin in Truckee under majestic granite peaks; take the scenic Highway 40 bypass to Donner Lake; or head out on the 6-mile all-seasons Truckee River Legacy Trail for a family biking adventure.

This year-round alpine destination offers exceptional outdoor adventures for any season, along with a rich history tied to the land and the railroad. Originally the summer home of the Washoe, Maidu, and Paiute Native American tribes, Truckee was founded in 1863 though only formally incorporated as a city in 1993. The mountain town holds a significant place in California's past and retains its frontier architecture and historic character. The area is also known for the pioneer trials of the Donner Party, which are carefully preserved and commemorated at the nearby state park. Truckee has also been featured in over 50 films and TV shows, dating back to the silent era.

As a significant hub during construction of the Transcontinental Railroad in the late 1800s, Truckee served as a point for clearing snow as the rails worked to link Sacramento with Reno. Today, visitors can still see the original train depot downtown or hop the train to Truckee as Amtrak’s California Zephyr passes through daily on the Sacramento - Chicago route.

Truckee’s vibrant spirit is fully displayed through the work of various artists in the area, and celebrated each summer on the popular Truckee Thursdays. Together with neighboring Palisades, Truckee hosts numerous music and food festivals in the warmer months - making this the perfect Sierra Nevada getaway for any Lake Tahoe escapade.
