Truckee is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. With 12+ ski resorts within a 45 minute drive, Truckee is one of the most ski-accessible destinations in the country - don’t miss out on the slopes at nearby Sugar Bowl, Palisades Tahoe, and North Star.
In addition to winter sports, there’s plenty to do in and around Truckee throughout the year: hiking, mountain climbing, paddling, biking the Truckee River Legacy Trail, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, river rafting, and horseback riding.
The closest airport serving Truckee is Reno-Tahoe International Airport about 30 minutes from town. Car rentals, shuttle services, and ride-share services are available at the airport.
By car, Truckee is conveniently located just off I-80, about 200 miles northeast of San Francisco, 100 miles of Sacramento, and just over 30 miles west of Reno, NV.
With Truckee’s railroad legacy, you can enjoy the thrill of visiting Truckee by train. Amtrak provides daily service through Truckee on the California Zephyr, one of the most scenic train routes in the country.
Truckee is closest to the northern side of Lake Tahoe, located about 20 minutes from Tahoe City on the lake itself. South Lake Tahoe is just over an hour’s drive from Truckee, making the entire lake, nearby ski resorts, and breathtaking overlooks easily accessible.
The town’s name comes from the Paiuite phrase ‘tro-kay’, meaning “everything is all right.” The phrase is associated with a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide settlers in the 1840s - 1850s.
