By car, Truckee is conveniently located just off I-80, about 200 miles northeast of San Francisco, 100 miles of Sacramento, and just over 30 miles west of Reno, NV.

Truckee is closest to the northern side of Lake Tahoe, located about 20 minutes from Tahoe City on the lake itself. South Lake Tahoe is just over an hour’s drive from Truckee, making the entire lake, nearby ski resorts, and breathtaking overlooks easily accessible.
The town’s name comes from the Paiuite phrase ‘tro-kay’, meaning “everything is all right.” The phrase is associated with a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide settlers in the 1840s - 1850s.
