Backstreet Art District began in 2005 with the opening of Dezart One Gallery and has since grown into an L-shaped building housing an impressive array of galleries and studios. 

The district's spirit is showcased monthly during the First Wednesday Art Walk from 5 to 7 pm. This year-round tradition is a vibrant celebration of art, sometimes enhanced by entertainment and food vendors. 

Beyond its monthly celebrations, the Backstreet Art District is a constantly evolving art scene. It serves as a platform for established and emerging artists to showcase their talents, offering an ever-changing array of exhibitions and events. 

This makes the district a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an immersive and inspiring artistic experience.

Located just off East Palm Canyon and a few miles from downtown, Backstreet Art District is typically open Thursday through Sunday. However, hours may vary as artists set their own schedules. 

The district comprises 10-12 stores, each providing a unique artistic experience. Many visitors are pleasantly surprised by the high quality of art, noting that this is not a typical tourist spot but a showcase of skilled artists and high-end art.

The Backstreet Art District houses the Gary Wexler Serigraph Studio, where the legacy of legendary midcentury architect Donald Wexler lives on through his son's screen-printed art. 

The district is home to a variety of eclectic art collections. Galleries like Galleria Marconi showcase Palm Springs' popular "Shoe Art" and other whimsical artistic creations. 

The Ola Vista Studio showcases art using bold colors in landscapes and cosmic themes, while Skipton Art specializes in rhythm and texture in abstract works.

Here's how you can get to the Backstreet Art District from downtown Palm Springs:

  • Begin your journey at E Alejo Rd, heading east toward N Calle Encilia
  • Travel along E Alejo Rd for approximately 1.6 miles
  • Take a right turn onto N Farrell Dr and proceed for about 2.0 miles
  • Make a left turn onto E Palm Canyon Dr. Follow this road for approximately 1.2 miles
  • Turn right onto Cherokee Way and continue for 0.2 miles
  • Lastly, take a left turn onto Matthew Dr. The Backstreet Art District will be in this area.

Cost

The general visitation and the monthly Art Walk are free, but individual galleries or events have their own costs or require purchases.
