This remarkable reserve, established in 1916, is tucked away in Fancy Gap along the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. It covers 280 acres and has a fascinating history and geological heritage.

Initially, it was a strategic location for early settlers and Native Americans. Today, Devil's Den Nature Preserve is a protected haven enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts, bird watchers, and nature lovers. Here, you'll discover unique rock formations, ancient forests, and diverse wildlife, creating a scenic and educational experience.

The cave and rock outcroppings were formed by the Appalachian and Piedmont rock encrustations colliding. At the cave, you'll spot deposits of mica, pyrites, and 45 inlays of solid quartz bands.

Devil's Den Nature Preserve is perched at 2,906 feet, giving guests a bird' s-eye view of the surrounding valleys. With its proximity to Fancy Gap, you can grab a meal afterward at places like Pit Stop Pasta & Grill.

A cool feature of this natural wonder is that the rock formations date back millions of years. Whether you're a "rock hound" or enjoy scaling boulders, the Devil's Den Nature Preserve will be a fascinating visit. While "Devil's Den" is labeled a cave, it's more of a metamorphic schist with granite outcroppings containing fascinating striations and compositions. 

A fun fact is that the preserve is home to over 1,000 plant species and numerous wildlife, especially birds. Hikers often spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional black bear. Bird watchers will be thrilled with the chance to spot the vibrant scarlet tanager and the majestic bald eagle.

The trail to the cave is another cool feature and has been described as moderate to challenging. It's an out-and-back path that is .43 miles long, which hikers note takes about 36 minutes to complete. It begins with a mild descent but becomes steeper near the cave. Naturally, the return trip is strenuous because it's uphill.

Here are step-by-step driving directions to Devil's Den Nature Preserve from Hillsville:

• Start on US-58 E from Hillsville, Virginia.
• Continue on US-58 E for approximately 8.5 miles.
• Merge onto Blue Ridge Parkway via the ramp on the left toward Fancy Gap.
• Follow Blue Ridge Parkway for about 4.2 miles.
• Turn right onto Devil's Den Road.
• Follow Devil's Den Road for 1.5 miles until you reach the entrance.
