About
Mountain Mama’s Bakery is the place to go for breakfast if you are coming to this area of Yellowstone! I loved my experience here and plan to come back again.
It's a relaxing, welcoming eatery where regulars know each other's names. The baked goods are yummy, the sandwiches are perfect, and the coffee is what you need to hit the trail.
There are a lot of fantastic things to love about this restaurant.
I talked to the person waiting on me, and she told me that the owner was the daughter of a dairy farmer in the area, which meant that everything they did was locally based. And I found that to be evident in the menu full of local, Yellowstone-specific meats, veggies, and meals.
They also have a large selection of organic items and they seek local fresh fruits when possible.
From the moment I arrived, I knew this location was different. The food was great, and the people were very welcoming. I also found that they made everything in small batches to preserve the quality and reduce waste, which is also well appreciated.
One thing I wish I had tried was their to-go gourmet boxed lunches and their chicken pot pies. I love that they have these full meals in pot pies that people can take with them on the trail, much like what you would have expected people to have done 100 years ago.
Vibe
This is a simple restaurant that's very laid back and reversed from a common dining experience. And the building itself is beautiful with its stone-clad design.
Mountain Mama’s Bakery in West Yellowstone is more about stopping in to pick up what you want and then heading out, as they don't have a lot of seating, but the entire point seems to be to prepare people for the road ahead.
I managed to grab one of the benches out front so that I could eat, and it was a very nice, relaxing place to be.
Mountain Mama's Bakery: Menu & Drinks
The food here is fun and different, and that's one of the reasons I wanted to stop by to try it out.
I enjoyed the Elk breakfast burrito. This is a huge burrito that was almost too much not to share. It is so good, though, that it was just a necessary thing to eat it all. The meat was moist and full of flavor, and the eggs were not overdone. The entire thing was excellent because it was piping hot and filling.
I also picked up a Huckleberry Turnover for an afternoon snack. This pastry featured homemade croissant dough with locally sourced huckleberries. Each bite was really special.
They serve Starbucks coffee, so it was easy enough to get my favorite option.
With its variety of food and coffee options, visiting this shop will appeal to a wide range of palates.
Local Tips
- A lot of the meats are locally raised, including the bison and elk, and the vegetables are grown in the region, which contributes to the goodness of this location.
- The Mountain Main Sausage is a blend of bison, wild boar, elk, and antelope, making it quite the unique blend.
- I found out they do group tour lunches where they can get your entire tour group set up with a boxed lunch to take with you on the road.
- You want to pick up some of those cookies to take home with you—my favorite was the Salted Carmel Cookie, but they have lots of other options.
