About

Quite possibly the most unique experiences you can find on the island, a visit to Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club must be on your bucket list! At this restaurant which doubles as an activity, you will get to meet and feed beer to their famous beer-drinking pigs!

The Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club is currently under the ownership of Nico Zayus, the third person to run the club. He is one of the most friendly, outgoing people we met on the island. He is always at the Domino Club, mingling and bartending. He also is one of the main people who will bring you over from the restaurant to meet the famous pigs!

The story of how beer drinking pigs became the iconic attraction it is today is quite unlikely! Back in the day, the Domino Club started as literally that - a club in the middle of the jungle where people could play dominos. One day, a tourist was at the club and he was quite drunk. He offered his beer to the pig and to his surprise, the pig loved it and the rest is history.

Note: The Domino Club is a Cash-only establishment! Make sure you come prepared.

Our Experience at Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club

Getting here is no easy task. The first thing you must note is that on Google Maps there are two locations for Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club. If you simply search the name in your mapping app, the wrong location will come up. It will lead you to a bar in downtown Frederiksted. What you need to do instead is go into the google app and search for the club. Use that exact coordinate location given to get to here. It should be just about 25 minutes outside of Frederiksted, in the middle of the jungle.

The road into the jungle is extremely turbulent so we highly recommend using a 4-wheel drive, and a raised one if possible. Though, our Kia Rios made it through just fine, you just have to take it slow. Upon arrival, you will see a sign with their name and logo, which depicts flying pigs, on it. It is unmistakable! They have around 20 parking spots and it was not difficult to find one.

The Pigs

Let me preface this by saying the beers are non-alcoholic O'doul's beers and the pigs are pros! They do not ingest any of the can and they love this stuff! To meet the pigs, you must wait at the restaurant. They take people to see the pigs in groups, generally once every hour depending on business. If you’d like to feed the pigs beer, you can purchase it at the restaurant. The cost is $3 per can and $2 for admission. If you don’t want to feed the pigs, but just be around to observe and experience it, you just have to pay admisison. Once it’s time to visit, they will make an announcement for you to follow them.

The pens are just a few steps away, across the parking lot. Nico or another team member will explain that you must shake the beer really well! Then, holding onto one end of the can, lead it to the inside of the hog’s mouth and let go. After the introduction, it’s time to feed them. Before you enter the pens, brace yourselves because the smell is not that pleasant.

They have a total of 5 pigs at this time - Chester, Willis, Hamilton, Kevin Bacon, and Gem. Hamilton or “Hammy” is Nico’s personal favorite and the only female of the bunch.

The Restaurant

The Mt. Pellier restaurant and bar serves refreshing cocktails, breakfast, and daily specialties.

  • Tuesday: Wings

  • Wednesday: Veggie and Salmon Burgers

  • Thursday: Burgers

  • Friday: Roti

  • Saturday: Breakfast

We went on a Friday which meant Roti day! Rotis are a popular, traditional Caribbean dish that consists of a stewed or curried meat - wrapped up in a tortilla-like bread. They had chicken, goat, beef, and duck!

They are also famous for their Mama Juana. Mama Juana can be found in many places across the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic, but every establishment will make it a little bit differently. It's a spiced alcoholic beverage that combines rum, red wine, honey, tree bark, and herbs. It may sound a little funky at first, but it's actually really delicious and smooth. As someone who tends to wince after a shot, I can confirm that this goes down smoothly and has a sweet, pleasant after taste. So, make sure you get a shot of this when you're here!

The Casago team highly recommends you visit this attraction and restaurant. Contact us today for help booking your perfect St Croix rental!
