What's da Scoop?

About

Whats da Scoop is the most adorable little ice cream shop in Christiansted on St. Croix. It’s located at 1115 Strand Street, down a few steps from Parrot Fish restaurant and bar.  I wandered in here after enjoying a meal at Parrot Fish one day and learned that the owners are Ray Mason and Natasha Mason. The shop has been open since 2019. They are a local family, and their niece Aniyah Baptiste often helps out. If my experience is typical, Aniyah has a bright future in customer service. She was fantastic and super helpful.

Location & Environment

Whats da Scoop is located at 1115 Strand Street, a few steps down from Parrot Fish restaurant and bar, on the same side of the street. It’s also just up about a block from Christiansted Boardwalk, making it a convenient stop while strolling around in the afternoon. They’re open seven days a week, from 10 AM to 7 PM. You’ll easily spot this shop by their brightly-painted turquoise front door and window. The inside of the shop is also painted that same beautiful turquoise, which matches the color of much of the waters around here. The shop is pretty low-key. There’s a wide wooden counter and of course the ice cream freezer where you can see all the flavors. It’s brightly lit, with wooden tables and chairs as well as a countertop eating area with high stools. The environment feels like I walked into an old-fashioned ice cream shop, or a relative’s kitchen who just loves ice cream and cakes. It’s nothing fancy. Just some wooden shelves hanging on the wall behind the counter, holding all their syrups and flavoring and other ingredients. Everything is visible; nothing is hidden. This is a working ice cream shop, and they even make a lot of their own ice cream.

Locally Made Ice Creams

Whats da Scoop offers dine in and take-out options, but no delivery. They do make most of the ice creams in-house, but some are imported. In addition to the standard flavors that you’d expect from any quality ice cream shop like this, some of the more unique available flavors include Ponche Kuba Almond, Dulce de Leche, Creamy Coconut and Cruzan Rum Raisin, Kahlua Coffee, Cinnamon Coconut and Baileys. The ones with alcohol names in their title actually do contain alcohol. I sampled the Cruzan Rum Raisin and I liked it, but then I decided to get a scoop of Kahlua Coffee in a cup. They have vegan ice cream, too, which I thought was very cool of them. They also have several varieties of sorbet, like soursop, tamarind, mango, guava and passion fruit. And…get this; they have CBD infusions of ice cream! I mean, I have never heard of that, but maybe it’s a thing now-I don’t know. Anyway, I didn’t get that, but you might like to try some when you come here. Oh, I forgot to mention that they have all the different kinds of cones; waffle, cake cones, sugar cones, chocolate dipped cones and even those giant sugar cones that you get at the fair.

Beverage Menu

There’s a small side cooler with cold bottles and cans of drinks (like Vita Malt), but Whats da Scoop offers smoothies, frappes and milk shakes, too. The frappe flavors vary from day to day. I’m pretty sure that they will make you a frappe with any flavor you want, even if it’s not on the official menu, though.

All Day Breakfast & Pastries

If you’re a person who doesn’t understand why you can’t have breakfast food for lunch, this is your kind of place. They serve breakfast all day, and they do it right. They have sandwiches, plates and specials. Breakfast sandwiches include turkey, egg and cheese, sausage, egg and cheese and bacon, egg and cheese. And by the way, Whats da Scoop breakfast sandwiches do not in any way resemble any certain fast food franchise breakfast “sandwiches.” These are nice, big sandwiches that will get you through to dinner time, no problem. Their plates and weekend specials include waffles, French Toast, and something special; Bailey’s French Toast, eggs, bacon and sausage. Naughty but nice! Also, if you’re in a rush, you can call ahead and they’ll have your breakfast ready for you to come pick up.

Another thing they do here is offer local pizza. You can get homemade pizza in the ice cream shop so you don’t have to make two stops. Pretty great, right?

Finally, they have a beautiful selection of cakes on the counter. These are homemade rum bundt cakes in a range of flavors including lemon, which is one of my favorites! Plus, they’re only $10, which is an awesome bargain no matter how you slice it!
