The Galleon

About

The Galleon Steaks and Seafood restaurant on St. Croix is an island favorite. Opened originally in 1984, The Galleon is now helmed by new owner and Chef, Charles Mereday. Chef Mereday has a long history in restaurants around the world, including in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands and France, including a tenure in St Thomas, at St Thomas’s Old Stone Farmhouse. According to press releases, Chef Mereday helped put certain restaurants on the map, such as in Naples, Florida. If you’re lucky, Chef Mereday will visit your table during his almost daily ramble through the dining room at The Galleon. The Chef is such an integral part of this restaurant’s environment, that many come simply to say hello and, of course, to sample the menu once again.

The Galleon is situated on the east end of St. Croix, next to Tamarind Reef Resort, in Green Cay Marina. In short, it’s right on the water, overlooking the boat docks. The restaurant is considered high-end, but still island-style. If you’re looking for a place to dine on fine food on the water near Christiansted, this is the place to come. It’s an excellent place to come with a date, your spouse or with anyone you want to impress. There is both inside and outside seating, with the outside seating overlooking the marina.

Our Experience at The Galleon

The spot where The Galleon is located is very beautiful in its own right. The restaurant is located right on the marina, so it has wonderful sunset views and outdoor deck seating with views of the boats. The exact address is 5000 Estate Southgate in Christiansted. It’s very easy to get to, and there’s a huge parking lot, so you won’t have any trouble finding the restaurant or a parking space. Reservations are recommended because they have limited opening hours, and they usually have a full house. They’re open from 4:00 to 9 PM on Tuesday through Saturday, and that’s it. You can book your reservation online or on the phone.

Dress at The Galleon is entirely up to you, but most people enjoy dressing up a bit. It’s a laid-back atmosphere, but the sophistication of the menu kind of dictates a more stylish environment. The Galleon is considered one of St. Croix’s best restaurants, so when you come here you know you’re going to get to class food and service. Incidentally, solo guests are welcome. There’s a beautiful bar and a friendly bartender just waiting to serve you if you’re on your own for the evening. The interior features a spacious dining room surrounded on three sides with big, bright windows looking out onto the marina. While there is plenty of seating next to the windows, you can still get a great view from almost anywhere in the restaurant.

The flooring is tile,  and the tables and chairs are wood and bamboo. The nature of the room means that it can get quite noisy when they’re busy, which is often.

Out on the deck, they have a beautiful set up. It’s spacious and elegant, with an array of strung lights that come on at night, making the place look utterly enchanting under the stars. Combine that with the gentle clanking of the boats in the marina and you have yourself a full-fledged island experience.

What's Good on the Menu

The Galleon offers dine-in and curbside pickup, but no delivery options. Dishes are served in white serve-ware, which complements the colorful arrangements of meat, seafood and vegetables. The portions are surprisingly generous. I personally recommend any of the steak dishes, but especially the filet mignon. Mine was done to perfection, practically melting in my mouth. To go with it, I suggest the beet salad, tossed with mango and goat cheese. I also overheard some other diners exclaiming in awe about the lobster special and the seared duck breast, so I suspect you can’t go wrong with either of those! Because the dishes are so large in portion, you might not want an appetizer, but I suggest you order one anyway, so you don’t miss out. The crab cake with mango salsa on the side was divine,  and my friend loved her veggie stuffed mushrooms with spinach, cheese and marinara sauce. Whatever dish you get, it's evident that Chef Mereday takes great pride in everything that comes out of his kitchen.

The Galleon has a nice array of craft and specialty cocktails. My favorite is the Green Cay Cooler, made with Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain, grapefruit and lemon juice. If you’re looking for something more “island-y,” I recommend the Tamarin Old Fashioned, with Woodford Reserve, tamarind, cherry and bitters. They also offer a big selection of red and white wines, plus Prosecco and Champagne.
