A visit to downtown Christiansted in St. Croix wouldn’t be complete without stopping at Shoup's on the Boardwalk. This low-key eatery, bar and grill on Strand Street is famous for its burgers and a whole lot more. Their tagline says it all; six dollar burgers with a $1 million view is right! (Although the burgers are now $7.) In my opinion, they have the best affordable food and drinks with a view to match in St. Croix. This place offers fantastic service, great island music and the kind of food that keeps you full for hours. They're open for lunch and dinner, which is a good thing because you’ll want to return for every meal. Located on the boardwalk in Christiansted, Shupe’s has a traditional American menu served with island flare. So, whether you're just out for a stroll or looking for a place to catch up with your friends, this is an ideal place to come for a refreshing drink and an island breeze.
Our Take on Shupes
The official address for Shupe’s on the Boardwalk is 1102 Strand St Suite 39A, but you really won't need the exact address to find it, because chances are you'll hear the music from outside and notice the lights on the deck. There's bar seating with a full, wraparound bar, and lots of people just come in for a drink, even solo tourists. The hours are 11 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday and 11 AM to 9 PM on Sunday. The environment is completely laid-back. You can show up here in shorts and a T-shirt or a tank top and it's completely fine. This is just like a neighborhood bar, except they also serve excellent food. It's not a huge place, but there is usually plenty of room because they have a large space for outdoor seating. The flooring inside is cement, with very casual tables and stools. It's not air-conditioned, but there are lots of ceiling fans overhead to keep you cool on warm days. Outside, you'll find comfortable, high-quality resin chairs with umbrellas and tables. There is a table side service both inside and out, and lots of people comment about how friendly the waitstaff are.
By far, the most popular seating choice is outside by the water. During the day, you can catch some rays, watch the fish, watch people walking by, or you can sit back with your drink and watch the sunset. It's really just a great place to get a bite to eat and be outside in Christiansted.
What's Good on the Menu
Shupe’s offers dine-in and takeout service, but no delivery. If you decide to order in and pickup to bring back to your private rental, you just pick up your order at the bar. They also offer catering, with a special dedicated catering menu to make your selections. For restaurant dining, I recommend the Buffalo Chicken Wings. I’ve had Buffalo Wings all over the world, and I’m telling you, these are some of the best. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with just the right amount of heat. They also tasted very authentic to the original Buffalo wings that famously started in New York City. If you’re in the mood for meaty and juicy, you’ve got to try the Shupe’s burger. Although they keep saying “we’re more than just a burger joint,” the burgers really do take center stage. They’re handmade in-house with top quality cuts of meat. They make it really simple; you can order a single patty or a double patty and then go from there as far as toppings. If you’re in the mood for a chicken burger, you can’t go wrong, either. They have four variations on the chicken burger; sriracha, BBQ, Buffalo and naked. I’m not a fan of chicken burgers, but my friend got one and he loved it. For dessert, I recommend the daily puff pie, which is ice cream in puff pastry. Honestly, Shrupe’s does’t have a huge menu. In general, you’re going to have a choice between a burger, a chicken burger, a hot dog or chicken wings, plus some vegetarian options. But sometimes that’s all you really need, right? Now for the real reason you’re here, the drinks. Shrupe’s makes really good cocktails, including daiquiris, smoothies and even Virgin smoothies. They are all served in plastic drinking cups, which also fits in with the laid-back island style that Shrupe’s is all about. All in all, this is a fun, go-to place when you’re strolling about on the boardwalk in St. Croix during the day or at night.
