Did you know that every year at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, an incredible natural phenomenon takes place? 

It's called the migration of the grunion and it occurs when the tiny fish come to shore to spawn at night. During high tide, they come onto the beach noisily splashing in large groups and just as quickly depart with the outgoing waves. This unique event is a sight to behold and one that locals look forward to every year! 

So whether you're a beachcomber or an ocean enthusiast, be sure to check out this amazing spectacle and witness nature in action.

Getting There

Swami's Beach is located in Encinitas, California.  

To get there, take I-5 South towards Encinitas and exit onto Santa Fe Dr. Head west on Santa Fe and make a left onto Coast Blvd. Follow Coast Blvd until you reach the entrance to Swami's Beach. There is also an adjacent parking lot available for visitors.

Local Tips

  • Parking is limited but there are extra spots close by so you won't be stuck searching.
  • Public restrooms with showers are onsite.
  • There is an amazing surf break at Swami's Beach that’s a great spot for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Be sure to bring a wetsuit if you plan on taking a dip, the water is known to be a bit chilly.
  • During the grunion migration season, be sure to check the tide chart before you go. This will ensure that you can witness this incredible natural phenomenon at its peak!
