About

Carlsbad is host to a destination rich with hands-on educational experiences that explain the complex ecosystem of a lagoon. Welcome to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (Discovery Center.)

The Foundation was established on March 3, 1990, to conserve and restore the Agua Hedionda Lagoon ecosystem and its surroundings.

The Discovery Center, completed in 2004, is proof of the Foundation's commitment to education and conservation. This 3,800-square-foot building started hosting public programs and outreach activities in 2005. Visitors are given a hands-on understanding of the area's flora and fauna.

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is a 400-acre water body that invites visitors to appreciate the importance of water resources. The stewardship of much of the lagoon rests with the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. The lagoon is also home to a YMCA day camp, adding to its charm and appeal.

The Foundation has been recognized for contributing to science education, earning the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence in 2007.
