About

While discussing which region's BBQ is superior can almost create riots, several things ring true for all areas. The best joints look rundown, and the scent of hickory smoke is strong on the wind.

Such is the case with the Rib Shak.

The Shak is nestled in Valley Head, Alabama, and sits off the road in what appears to be an old gas station from the 60s. A makeshift sign above the door is the clue: "Walley's Fillin Station."

The Rib Shak isn't much to look at, but when you spot the mobile BBQ pit parked out front, your mouth starts watering!

While not much is known about this BBQ joint's history, the rave online reviews should be all you need to know. Aside from traditional Southern BBQ fare, the Rib Shak pushes the envelope for creative lunch dishes.

There is limited outdoor seating, but this is the type of BBQ place where you either sit inside or is your go-to spot for meals to go.

Whether it's your first time trying some Southern BBQ or you're a pit master, the Pit Shak is a must when vacationing in the Lookout Mountain area of Alabama.

Vibe

The Rib Shak may be in an old building, but it's not dilapidated or lacking some curb appeal. The wooden addition is painted red, probably in honor of Alabama football's colors, and boasts white signs easily seen from the road.

The gas station's overhang protects picnic tables from the elements. And the building's aged brick is a reminder of an era when gas attendants hustled to service and fill your car.

Inside, the decor remains drab, but then again, you're here for authentic pit BBQ, not to be impressed by a chic design scheme.

The interior's mason brick walls are painted, and the restaurant is clean. A few wood tables dot the area, perfect for downing a platter of pork, slaw, and BBQ sauce.

And if you're in a rush, the Rib Shak even has a drive-through area.

When you want "the real deal" BBQ, whether as a meal or for a catered event, go see the good people at the Rib Shak. They'll hook you up!

Rib Shak: Menu & Drinks

Let's cut to the chase: the BBQ offerings.

A Southern BBQ staple is the pulled pork sandwich. Juicy, smoky pork is piled high on a bun and then topped with coleslaw. Squirt on your choice of BBQ sauce, and expect to grab some extra napkins to catch the sauce and juices!

The full or half-rack ribs are a must-try. Slow-cooked to perfection, these pork ribs are smothered in Rib Shak's signature sauce, which strikes the perfect balance between tangy and sweet. Every bite melts in your mouth.

They also serve chicken, burgers, and BBQ nachos. But some of their lunch specials are noteworthy. The Meatloaf Lunch Special is moist and topped with rich BBQ sauce, while the baked spaghetti and garlic bread are filling and not what you'd expect from a BBQ place.

Best of all are the prices. Lunch specials and the heartier plates are around $8.

The Rib Shak offers amazing BBQ, creative comfort food, and all are reasonably priced. It's the perfect Lookout Mountain spot for families or large groups.
