About

Tropical sun, tepid turquoise sea, warm sand, and a cold beer. Such are the joys of vacation life on the Big Island. And when it's time for a chilled brew, nothing beats the offerings at Kona Brewing Co.

This brewing company was established in 1994 by father and son duo Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. They combined their love for Hawaii with their passion for quality craft beer to create a brand that represents the spirit, culture, and beauty of Hawaii.

But their vision went beyond just producing excellent beer. They wanted to reflect the relaxed, vivacious Hawaiian islands' lifestyle.

Kona Brewing Co. has become synonymous with craft brewing in Hawaii, and the brand's story is recognized worldwide.

One fascinating aspect of Kona Brewing Co.'s history is that there are actually two Kona breweries. Both produce the popular Big Wave and Longboard Lager, featuring the same evocative island art and branding. It's important to note that Kona Brewing Co. is now owned by PV Brewing Partners but was formerly part of the Craft Brew Alliance.

Over the years, the brewery has celebrated significant milestones. In 2023, it marked its 25th anniversary with the release of a unique Hibiscus Brut IPA.

Kona Brewing Co. continues to brew its beer on the mainland under the tagline "Founded in Hawaii, Brewed on the Mainland," honoring its roots while expanding its reach.

Vibe

Visitors to the Kona Brewing Co. are met with a warm, friendly atmosphere that mirrors the laid-back Hawaiian lifestyle.

The brewery exudes a vibrant energy, from its friendly staff to the lively chatter of patrons enjoying brews. It's where locals and tourists gather to relax, socialize, and taste some of the best craft beers in Hawaii.

The brewery's design also contributes to its unique vibe. The decor is a blend of traditional Hawaiian elements and modern brewing aesthetics, creating an inviting and exciting atmosphere.

The 2,000-foot outdoor lanai seating area offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It's the idyllic spot to unwind after a day of Kona fun with a cold beer on a sunny afternoon.

The atmosphere at Kona Brewing Co. can be best described as a lively celebration of Hawaiian culture, craft beer, and the spirit of 'ohana (family).

Whether you're a craft beer enthusiast or simply looking for a unique Hawaiian experience, a visit to Kona Brewing Co. is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Kona Brewing Co.: Menu & Drinks

A visit to Kona Brewing Co. is an absolute treat for the senses, with a menu that showcases the vibrant flavors of Hawaii. The food and drinks are crafted with care, using locally sourced ingredients that result in dishes and beverages brimming with tropical flair.

One of the standout dishes at Kona Brewing Co. is Uncle's Fish Tacos.

These mouth-watering delights showcase fresh, locally sourced fish seasoned in Cajun spices and then topped with cabbage and black bean salsa. This tantalizing combo is heaped into flour tortillas and covered with avocado crema, making each bite a spicy yet satisfying delight.

Another must-try is the Shoyu Ginger Chicken. This dish is a beautiful fusion of local Hawaiian flavors, featuring tender chicken marinated in shoyu (soy sauce), ginger, and other seasonings, resulting in a flavor-packed dish that's hard to resist. Green onions, sesame seeds, and white rice come on the side.

While the food is sensational, it's the beers that draw the crowds.

Kona Brewing Co. is also renowned for its comprehensive selection of craft beers. The Kona Big Wave is a light, golden ale that's perfect for those who prefer a milder beer. At the same time, the Kona Black Sand Porter is a robust choice with a rich, dark color and a complex flavor profile. Not sure what to order? Try a flight of four 5-ounce beers of your choice to narrow down your search.

Wine lovers have options, as do gluten-sensitive drinkers.
