About

Round Rock Donuts is easily one of the best donut shops in the area. In fact, it's been here cranking out outstanding tasty treats for almost a century.

In 1926, Reinhold R. Moehring opened the Lone Star Bakery on Main Street and began trying out donut recipes in the 1930s, aiming to create something unique. In the early 1940s, he perfected the donut and created the Round Rock Doughnut that we all know and love.

The second owner of the show was Selma Erlanson, who was Louise Johnson, an associate's sister. Roy Hester took over after that, but in 1946, Moehring took over the shop again. The shop would change hands a number of times over the years, all maintaining that specific donut that everyone loves.

They are probably best known for their glazed donuts, and while they may not sound like anything special, they are exceptional. They are hot, fresh, and deliciously smooshy when you get them—every single time.

And no matter when you show up, the donuts are warm and perfectly yummy. They offer other goodies and blended coffee drinks as well, but hands down, the simple glaze donut is the best.

These signature donuts have a unique yellow coloring to them, which can be surprising at first. But this is a recipe that's yeast-risen, which creates more of a bread-like texture. The yellow color comes from the eggs within it, and that really makes it much different than anything else.

Fun fact, because they do not use a recipe like most other baking powder-based donuts, they cannot cut these with a machine. That means every batch has to be hand-rolled, cut, fried, and then iced.

And while I have visited numerous locations over the years, the one thing I’ve learned is that all of them are always busy, regardless of the time of day.

The location in Round Rock Downtown is walk-up and drive-thru only, so there is no seating available, but there’s a park across the street that offers a beautiful place to enjoy your sweet treats.

Whether you stop by this location for a visit or one of the many others, you are sure to get an incredible donut experience!

Vibe

The location is busy—that's the vibe here. Oh, and it also smells like sweet sugar all day long.

Be prepared, you are going to wait, but the team working here is always happy and smiling (I don't know how they do it, but they seem to never stop!)

It is such an upbeat, positive-energy location with lots of good things happening.

Round Rock Donuts: Menu & Drinks

When I visited this location, I decided on the world-famous glazed donut, and it was out of this world.

If you are in Round Rock, you absolutely need to try this donut. It's indescribably delicious.

What I also learned is that the locations continue to make the same donuts—from the original owner's recipe. And well, that makes all the difference because there is nothing else like it out there.

Local Tips

  • The locations are always busy, as I mentioned, producing as many as 500 dozen donuts on busy days!
  • The Round Rock location also does wedding cakes – and they are exceptional in their own right, but you will have to give them plenty of time.
  • The donuts come out of the fryer from 4:20 AM to 6:30 PM every day all day long, and that means that to meet the needs of their customers, they do not take any pre-orders that are anything less than 20 dozen.
  • You can use a delivery service to have them delivered right to your door, and that is a dangerous thought for those who have tried these yummy treats.
