SAW's Soul Kitchen

About

Ranked as Birmingham's best BBQ joints, SAW's Soul Kitchen is a must-visit for anyone craving bold flavors and Southern traditions.

Our story begins in North Carolina, home to arguably the Southeast's epicenter of regional BBQ. Here, Mike Wilson developed his love and skill for NC-style barbecue and earned the nickname "Sorry Ass Wilson."

Fast forward to 2009, when Broadway Barbecue was closing, and Mike leaped at the opportunity. He purchased the joint and named it SAW in honor of his high school nickname.

Mike's sweat equity paid off, and in no time, he was eyeing other properties for his legendary BBQ. On a golfing trip, he met Chef  Brandon Cain, who had experience working alongside iconic chefs like Emeril Lagasse in New Orleans. The two hit it off, and Chef Brandon took the helm of SAW's Soul Kitchen when it opened in 2012. With his Louisiana flair, he added unique dishes to SAW's BBQ menu.

Additionally, Mike and Brandon teamed up with Chef John Hall to open Post Office Pies. While this spot serves wood-fired pizzas, not BBQ, it exemplifies the men's creative culinary drive.

The downtown location is close to some of Alabama's premier landmarks, making planning sightseeing around a meal easy. For instance, visit the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame or the Southern Museum of Flight, and afterward, have a soul-satisfying meal at SAW's. The combinations of possibilities are endless!

While there are other locations in the Magic City, SAW's Soul Kitchen features unique menu choices like sandwiches and greens.

All of this makes visiting a must when vacationing in Alabama!

Vibe

If you're visiting from outside the Southeast, here's a tip: the best BBQ joints are in shacks with a no-frills decor. And if you can't smell hickory smoke, then it's not the Real McCoy!

These and more await you at SAW's Soul Kitchen. Positioned on a corner in Avondale, the limestone exterior, tin awning, and rusty pole sign are indicators that this eatery is legit!

The quaint interior has rustic wood, a chalkboard menu, no-fuss seating, and Southern memorabilia on the walls and ceilings.

Along one wall is the bar with solo seating, perfect for grabbing a cold one with a pork sandwich. Simple wood tables fill the dining area, while picnic tables out front are go-tos, weather permitting.

This BBQ joint offers a slice of Southern charm that will elevate any Iron City vacation.

SAW's Soul Kitchen: Menu & Drinks

Now, let's get to the lip-smackin', finger-lickin' good stuff: the food!

The sandwiches feature classics like pulled pork with red sauce and pickles, and creative handhelds like Sweet Tea Fried Chicken. The latter comes with Alabama sauce (white BBQ) and pickles. You'll also find smoked chicken, sausages, and burgers.

Another favorite section is the Stuffed Taters. These meals-in-a-spud include gems like chicken rich with butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese, green onions, bacon, and smoked chicken. Add the red BBQ sauce, and it's a decadent, savory potato!

The Pork' n' Greens is a culinary creation with smoked pulled pork, seasoned collard greens, and creamy cheese grits. A crispy onion ring adds a satisfying crunch to this smoky, tangy, savory masterpiece!

After a day of sightseeing at places like the Birmingham Museum of Art, satisfy your ravenous appetite with a Supper Time entree. These include pulled pork and chicken, sausage, chicken thighs, and a combo plate. All come with two sides, such as deviled eggs, vinegar-based coleslaw, fries, and greens.

Rehydrate with fresh-squeezed lemonade or iced teas made daily. You'll also find soft drinks, beer, and wine selections.

Of note are the cocktails like the Smoked Old Fashion. This drink highlights SAW's homemade smoked simple syrup that makes the bourbon shine!

SAW's Soul Kitchen celebrates Southern flavor, hospitality, and creativity. From classics like the Pork' n' Greens to its laid-back atmosphere and welcoming vibe, it delivers an unforgettable dining experience.
