About
What do you get when you cross Napolean-style pizza, Greenwich Village, and the Respinto family? The answer is Pizzeria G.M.!
The story of this pizzeria begins in Naples, the gritty hometown of Giovanni Respinto. When he migrated to the United States, he brought his love for Napolean pizza to NY, where he managed Rocco's restaurant during the 1960s.
Giovanni had two sons, Gianni and Marco, who learned to cook beside their father. When the boys were adults, they settled in Birmingham, opening GianMarco's in 2003.
The upscale Italian eatery had a sister in 2018 when the family opened Pizzeria G.M., known for inventive pizzas, indulgent appetizers, and a casual atmosphere.
If pizza isn't your preference, their menu also includes homemade lasagna, sandwiches, and seasonal salads. Vegetarian and vegan selections ensure inclusivity for all diners.
The Homewood location places it near landmarks like Vulcan Park & Museum and Red Mountain Park. Such proximity means you're never far from mouth-watering pies!
When your vacationing crew craves pizza, and others demand sandwiches or salads, head to Pizzeria G.M. for a menu that caters to all tastes.
Vibe
Like GianMarco's, Pizzeria G.M. is a standalone building in a residential neighborhood. Unlike the sister restaurant, the all-white structure is new, with black graffiti serving as its signage and matching awnings, adding a contemporary look.
Attached to the rear of the eatery is a covered patio, perfect when the weather is warm.
The interior features a chic industrial decor with exposed steel roof joists, concrete finishes, and warm lighting. White subway tile in the kitchen is a tip of the hat to the family's NY roots. The open kitchen tantalizes the senses with the scent of garlic, pizzas, and sandwiches in the oven.
The dining area features a stained concrete floor with simple wooden tables and chairs. While comfortably spaced, the vibrancy of the room and kitchen may not suit an intimate meal.
With its warm vibe, fantastic food, and versatile setup, Pizzeria G.M. nails the perfect balance for a laid-back lunch or dinner after exploring the McWane Science Center.
Pizzeria G.M.: Menu & Drinks
If you picture the menu as something like a chain restaurant or a typical pizza joint, think again. While classics abound, the delight is the range of creativity throughout the menu.
Let's begin with the small plates. Choose from classics like baked mozzarella flatbread, eggplant parmesan, and beef carpaccio. Adventurous palates will marvel at options like the Prosciutto Basil Wrapped Shrimp. The tender prawns come with zucchini, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, pepper relish, and romesco sauce.
Sandwiches reflect the family's NY and Alabama roots. The New York Reuben has mounds of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on rye bread. The Fried Green Tomato is a Southern staple on sourdough bread with Canecuh bacon, Romaine lettuce, and some mayo.
Moving on to the pizzas, one seasonal pie diners rave about is the Chilton County Peach Pizza. This pizza marries sweet, juicy peaches with savory Conecuh sausage and fresh mozzarella, creating a flavor profile that's both unexpected and utterly delicious.
Another must-try is the Baked Rigatoni Bolognese Pizza, a showstopper with hearty rigatoni, ground beef, Sunday sauce, mozzarella, pecorino, mascarpone cheese, and fresh oregano. The crisp, thin pizza crust perfectly balances two classic Italian dishes.
When you're ready to toast your day on the RTJ Golf Trail courses, order a craft cocktail, beer, or wine. The limoncello spritzer stands out for its refreshing and light citrus notes, while the espresso martini blends rich coffee flavors with enough sweetness to wrap up a meal.
The beer and wine selections will appeal to various palates, ensuring a beverage for everyone.
Visiting Pizzeria G.M. on your Alabama getaway offers an innovative menu with local ingredients and traditional Italian techniques. The diverse offerings cater to all tastes, from vegetarians to meat lovers, making it a destination spot for diners of all preferences.
