Malmok Beach

Just north of Noord is Malmok Beach, renowned for its limestone shoreline, small cliffs, and small beach. 

Unlike its neighbor, Boca Catalina Beach, Malmok Beach has smaller, more intimate sandy areas. These are tucked between rugged cliffs and pebbly pathways, while the largest beach is home to primitive cabanas. 

Nature lovers enjoy exploring the paths that wind through the landscape dotted with cacti and divi-divi trees. The cliffs, around 10' tall, are idyllic for watching sunsets or diving into the turquoise Caribbean. 

Malmok Beach doesn't have bustling beach bars or noisy water sports. Instead, it offers tranquility, where the only sounds are the wind and surf. For these reasons, many prefer the area over the more populated beaches. 

Another popular feature of the beach is the snorkeling opportunities. Many Aruba boat tours make a beeline for Malmok Beach so guests can snorkel the shallow, calm waters. Many of these sites are accessible from shore, which will appeal to those who prefer exploring in their timeframe. Add the two sunken ships near the beach, and you can understand why Malmok is a popular destination.

Malmok Beach: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Two cool features of this beach are the shipwrecks we mentioned earlier. The most impressive and popular is the E.S. Antilla. This WWII German freighter was scuttled in 1940 to evade capture. The 400-foot vessel rests at the entrance of Malmok Bay in 60 feet of water and is home to tropical fish, sea turtles, and rays. 

The Baboo shipwreck is south of Antilla and visible from shore. The vessel was sunk as an artificial reef, but storms and hurricanes pushed it inland to its current position. It is in 6-10' water, accessible from shore, and home to diverse sea life. 

If snorkeling these wrecks doesn't interest you, the clear waters near shore are home to coral, triggerfish, sea turtles, and parrotfish. 

The California Lighthouse is a short drive north for those who prefer land-based activities. The iconic structure offers panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the Caribbean Sea. For a small fee, you can climb to the top for a bird' s-eye view of the area. 

After a day of fun in the sun, grab a meal and a cold drink at any of the area's restaurants. Gianni's Restaurant serves authentic Italian cuisine, while 2 Fools And A Bull offers 5 ½ courses in a private setting.

Getting There

Here are step-by-step driving directions from Oranjestad to Malmok Beach:

• Start by heading west on Havenstraat toward L.G. Smith Boulevard.
• Take a right onto L.G. Smith Boulevard.
• Continue straight on L.G. Smith Boulevard for approximately 10 kilometers, following the signs for Malmok Beach.
• As you approach the California Lighthouse, keep left to continue along L.G. Smith Boulevard.
• The destination is on your right.
