Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner! If you’re planning to come to Puerto Peñasco for the holiday, be prepared to encounter a lot of traffic coming down and heading back as well. In addition, prepare for lots of people in town for the last big holiday weekend before summer. Remember, the border will be open until 10 PM versus the normal 8 PM, but only for that weekend. So, you will have between 6 AM and 10 PM to get here. Please drive with care and remember to take into account the wait at the border into your plans.

If you don’t as yet have a place to stay, you need to do it now as many places are already booked. Give Casago a call to see what they have available for that weekend.

Popular Activities in Peñasco

Water Activities & ATV Rentals

Whether you’re with your family or your partner, water activities have proven to be the number one most popular activity in the region. Sit back and relax on the beach, take an exciting excursion to Bird Island, or jet ski, kayak, and parasail on Sandy Beach. The number of activities to choose from is limitless. If you prefer to stick to land over sea, then you’ll be excited to rent an ATV or Jeep to drive through town or sand dunes!

Fishing

If you like to fish, this is the perfect time of the year to go out. Check out Pancho Villa Charters or Big Momma to take you out for the big fish. Both of these are very comfortable boats and have captains that have been in the business for years and know the Sea of Cortez. If you prefer to go out for just a few hours, there are several panga’s that will take you out for the smaller fish like Trigger. The Trigger will give you a run for your money and are a great eating fish that is white and mild.

Golfing

This will be a great time to play some golf at Las Palomas, the Mayan or Isla del Mar as the weather is beautiful! The most challenging of these courses is the the Jack Niklaus Course at Vidanta Mayan. It’s also the most expensive, but includes a cart, driving range access, and practice balls. Be sure to book your tee times ahead since this is a very busy holiday weekend in town. The course at the Club at Islas Del Mar is arguable the most beautiful course. Not sure which is the best choice for you? Find more information on all three of these courses on our activity page before making your decision.

Mermaid Market

Don’t forget to stop by the Mermaid Market on the 28th between 10 am and 3 pm. Here, you can find some great gift items hand-crafted by local artists and photographers. Enjoy the BBQ from the BBQ House and wonderful Tamales from Javier and Linda. Russ Black will be serving up some great specialty drinks as well as ice cold beer. This is the last show until fall and will be Pirate themed. Dress up like a pirate and win some great prizes from the vendors. This is a great way to spend a day in Shrimp Park dancing to some really good bands while supporting local businesses.

Popular Restaurants in Peñasco

Sandy Beach will be packed, but you can chill out at the new Diego’s at Esmeralda or Banditos, Changos or Playa Bonita. If you are looking for a nice dinner, head over to Garufa for a prime steak, Chef Mickey’s, Pan y Vino, Grapes & Barley, Moo Steakhouse or Mar Blu. This will be a great time to check out the remodeled  JJ’S Cantina in Cholla Bay or stop by Wrecked at the Reef.

If you plan to go to the Malecon, plan to go early to get a place to park in one of the $5 parking lots. It will be packed every day of the holiday weekend. If this is your first trip to Puerto Peñasco, check out the places in the port for a cold beer and some great food like The Blue Marlin, Boo Bar, Shark Bite, Tequila Bar or the Margarita Mermaids. All of these also have air conditioning for your enjoyment. Manny’s Beach Club in the Mirador area is always a great place to hang out as well as the Pink Cadillac, Baja Cantina, Capone’s or the Pitaya Bar.
