The shores of Rocky Point in northern Sonora provide a perfect backdrop for Americana rock-n-roll with a dash of tequila. For over two decades, the Arizona-based band Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers have drawn fans to this corner of the Sea of Cortez for multi-day music fests. Circus Mexicus and January Jam in Rocky Point are highly anticipated annual music treks to Rocky Point’s beaches for RCPM’s energetic fanbase of peacemakers.
January Jam 2025 dates: January 16 – 19, 2025
January Jam
RCPM’s January Jam in Rocky Point started in 2008 after an 8-day recording session in the popular area of Cholla Bay on the western side of Rocky Point. JJ’s Cantina in the heart of Cholla Bay proved to be an ideal outdoor venue for the band to put on a spontaneous jam after a week of recording. January Jam was born!
Over the years, RCPM’s beachside jam to open the year has expanded from JJ’s Cantina to diverse music venues across town. However, the music always comes back to its roots on the steps of JJ’s, overlooking the bay. Building on JJ Cantina’s legendary history, Roger Clyne is now one of the owners of the famed location, along with five others who have made Rocky Point their home.
Cholla Bay
Cholla Bay on the western side of Rocky Point is a community within a community. Ever since its early days, this curious part of town has attracted throngs of fishermen from the U.S. – well before the highway from Arizona was even paved. A bumpy dirt road extending from Sandy Beach still leads out to Cholla Bay. The welcome laid-back beach vibe in Cholla Bay reflects a mixture of local residents, expats, and vacation seekers.
The rough outcropping hugging the Sea of Cortez in Cholla Bay sees some of the most dramatic tide changes. On the northern side of Cholla Bay, you can sometimes walk out over the sea bed. Yet, be sure to check the tide calendar (and don´t park out there as the tide will soon come back in!). This spot on the outskirts of the city sits in an enclave beyond the condo developments lining Sandy Beach. Stay on the road that skirts around Competition Hill and you’ll find your way to Cholla Bay.
¡January Jam y más!
While RCPM’s January Jam in Rocky Point may have begun in the eclectic setting of Cholla Bay, over the years the music has spread along Sandy Beach and into town. What was once principally one big jam has grown into a nearly four-day music festival. Another popular part of January Jam weekend is the annual Canción Tequila Golf Tournament held on Saturday of the jam at Las Palomas. RCPM encourages golf, music, and tequila aficionados to make it a colorful and relaxed golf affair. Along with raffles, the golf tournament is part of RCPM’s way of giving back to the community of Rocky Point as all proceeds go to local charitable groups.
So, plan for music on the sea at RCPM’s January Jam in Rocky Point over MLK weekend. With music venues stretching from Cholla Bay to Sandy Beach, and over to the Old Port, its a rockin’ vacation getaway to start the year.
