Welcome to

Sonoma County

Sonoma County is Northern California's most complete vacation destination. Here, vineyard-covered valleys, old-growth redwood forests, and the wild Pacific coastline sit side by side within an hour's drive of each other. Whether you seek sipping wines, exploring the coast, or relaxing in the forest, the hardest part of planning a Sonoma County trip is choosing which part to explore first!

The region stretches along the dramatic Sonoma Coast - where Bodega Bay’s rocky headlands meet the Pacific - through the towering redwoods and into the sun-soaked wine valleys of Healdsburg, Sonoma, Glen Ellen, and Napa. Each of these communities possess a unique character and offer different experiences. For instance, Bodega Bay delivers rugged coastline, whale watching, and Dungeness crab straight off the boat. Guerneville offers lazy summer river floats, 1,500-year-old redwoods, and a welcoming community. Healdsburg serves up three wine regions, Michelin-starred dining, and a walkable plaza ringed with tasting rooms. Napa puts you steps from 55+ walkable tasting rooms, the Oxbow Public Market, and hot air balloon rides at dawn.

Sonoma County is closer to the Bay Area than most visitors expect. The town of Sonoma is about an hour from San Francisco, while Bodega Bay is under 2 hours, and Healdsburg and the Russian River are about 90 minutes north. Such proximity makes this county one of Northern California's most popular weekend getaway destinations. It's the kind of place where a long weekend turns into a tradition.

If you need help choosing the right area and home in Sonoma County — whether that means a hot tub under the redwoods, an ocean-view cottage, a dog-friendly escape, or a vineyard estate with a pool — contact our team at 707-582-2483, and we'll be glad to assist!

Frequently Asked Questions

Sonoma County is a year-round destination, where every season offers something worth seeing and doing.

  • Summer: This peak season features warm weather, river recreation, and long vineyard evenings.
  • Harvest (September–October): Fall is the most exciting time in wine country: grape picking, winemaker dinners, golden-light vineyard views.
  • Spring: Warmer weather brings wildflower blooms, mustard in the vineyards, and festivals like Barrel Tasting Weekend and BottleRock Napa Valley.
  • Winter: The cold months are popular for whale watching on the coast, fireside retreats, Winter Wineland passport events, and the lowest rates.

Our vacation wonderland is closer than most visitors expect! From San Francisco, Sonoma is about an hour drive, while Healdsburg is about 90 minutes. Bodega Bay is approximately 1.5 hours via US-101 to Highway 1, while Napa is roughly one hour via the Bay Bridge. Keep in mind that weekend traffic, particularly on Friday afternoons, can add 30 to 60 minutes to crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

For most areas, yes. A car is essential along the coast and in the Russian River corridor, where public transit is limited, and rideshare is unreliable. The exceptions are downtown Napa and the town of Sonoma — both have walkable cores with tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops. Wine tour companies and private drivers are popular alternatives for winery-hopping.

It depends on what you're looking for:

  • Bodega Bay: Ocean lovers, whale watchers, quiet coastal escape
  • Guerneville & Russian River: Nature lovers, river recreation, casual inclusive vibe, old-growth redwoods
  • Healdsburg: Refined wine-and-food experience, walkable downtown plaza, three wine regions
  • Sonoma & Glen Ellen: Historic charm, intimate boutique wineries, romantic setting
  • Napa: Walkable tasting rooms, the Wine Train, Oxbow Public Market, pool access
  • Cazadero & Forestville: Deep seclusion in the redwoods

Contact our team at 707-582-2483, and we'll recommend the right area for your trip.

Absolutely! Consider a hot tub under the redwoods, a fireside evening in a Bodega Bay cottage, a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Napa vineyards, or a private wine tasting at a boutique estate in Glen Ellen.

Walkable tasting rooms in Sonoma, Healdsburg, and Napa make for effortless date-day itineraries. Our vacation rentals offer more space and privacy than hotels, making them a favorite for anniversaries, birthdays, and long weekends away.

Sonoma County has a packed events calendar year-round. Plan your visit to coincide with some of these top favorites:

  • January: Winter Wineland (complimentary tastings at 12+ wineries)
  • March: Barrel Tasting Weekend (signature Wine Road event)
  • May: BottleRock Napa Valley (3-day music and food festival, May 22–24, 2026)
  • Summer: River recreation, outdoor concerts, Lazy Bear Week, and Women's Weekend in Guerneville
  • September: Harvest season begins, as does the Sonoma County Harvest Fair
