Isla Río Cuale is confusing to many Puerto Vallarta visitors. It seems to be hard to find, but it’s actually an island almost in the heart of the city. The tiny island sits on an inlet of Banderas Bay. To get there, walk south from El Malecon to the bridge that spans the river.
Old Vallarta
Pay a visit to Viejo Vallarta, aka Old Vallarta, or Old Town. Located a little south of downtown, it’s also known as the Romantic Zone. The locals know that it is actually newer than Downtown PV, but the cobblestone streets give it more of a pueblo feel. The producer-only market requires all vendors to grow, make, or bake all items sold. Fresh produce can be taken to vacation rentals by visitors to prepare meals. Walk the new Malecon
This promenade allows you to take in all the sights, sounds, and aromas of Puerto Vallarta. It’s an especially good place to visit on Sunday evenings. The Malecon takes on a carnival atmosphere as artists, musicians, and local vendors line the walk to sell all kinds of interesting wares from bundles of balloons to fun souvenirs. You’ll also find plenty of good eats like street tacos along with shops, restaurants, and bars.
