Fun Facts & Cool Features

The name 'Uinta' is derived from the Ute Native American tribe word "Yoov-we-teuh," meaning a pine tree or a pine forest. This linguistic heritage reflects the deep-rooted connection between the land and its original inhabitants.

The Uinta Mountain range, part of the Rocky Mountains, stands out for being the highest range in the contiguous United States that runs east to west, contrasting the more common north-to-south orientation.

Over 545 miles of hiking trails crisscross the Uinta National Forest, including the notable Highline Trail. This trail spans 64 miles, mostly above 10,000 feet, offering hikers both challenging treks and accessible day hikes.

The Dinosaur National Monument, located southeast of the Uinta National Forest, contains over 800 paleontological sites, making it a treasure trove for dinosaur enthusiasts and history buffs.

Regardless of your age or outdoor experience, the folks at Uinta Recreation cater to everyone and ensure your Heber City adventure is safe, fun, and economical.

  • Book campsites in advance, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Developed campsites are available along roads, and camping is permitted in undeveloped areas.
  • Be cautious of wildlife, such as black bears and moose. Do not approach wildlife, and avoid leaving food out at campsites.
  • Detailed maps like the High Uintas Wilderness Map are essential for navigation, especially while backpacking. These maps show trails, camping spots, and water sources.
  • Short hikes can be as brief as 1-2 hours, starting from Highway 150 trailheads.
