Welcome to

Aspen

Renowned for its world-class skiing, luxury lifestyle, and upscale mountain charm, Aspen defies the ordinary with its four-season appeal for outdoor adventure. Arts and culture are also on full display in Aspen, reflecting the city’s founding focus on Mind, Body, and Spirit - known as “The Aspen Idea.”

Located in Western Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Elk Mountains. This dramatic landscape features dense alpine forests, rushing rivers, and the iconic Maroon Bells, which stand as the most photographed mountains in North America.

Once called “Shining Mountains” by the Ute people who used this area as hunting grounds, Aspen’s history is interlinked with the silver boom of the late 1800s before its rebirth as a tourist destination in the mid-1940s. Founded in 1879 during the Colorado Silver Boom, over the centuries Aspen has transformed from mining camp to an awe-inspiring cultural center and ski mecca on the Western Slope. History enthusiasts can enjoy exploring the iconic Wheeler Opera House and historic Hotel Jerome as architectural testaments to Aspen’s historic silver mining past.

Skiing arrived in Aspen in the 1940s, along with its first boat-tow ski lift and the town’s modern day founders, Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. The Paepckes are credited with establishing “The Aspen Idea” - a cultural ethos that continues to thrive and attract wellness seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, and artists to the picturesque mountain landscape.

With four world-renowned ski areas—Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass, visitors enjoy thousands of acres for skiing and - since 2001 - snowboarding during the winter months. When the snow melts, the mountains transform into a top destination for hiking, mountain biking, and world-class fly fishing along the Roaring Fork River. Outdoor enthusiasts will find trails suited for every skill level.

Situated just under 200 miles southwest of Denver, Aspen remains highly accessible despite its rugged setting. A majority of visitors travel from urban hubs across the United States, including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Houston. Many travelers bypass the drive by taking advantage of convenient direct flights straight into the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport.

Experience the perfect blend of rich mountain history, thrilling outdoor recreation, glittery comfort, and modern luxury in Aspen. Start planning your unforgettable Rocky Mountain getaway.

The best time to visit Aspen depends on your interests. December through March offers prime skiing and snowboarding conditions. For hiking, festivals, and warm weather, visit between June and August.

Flying into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is the most convenient option, with direct flights from major US cities. Alternatively, you can fly into Denver International Airport and drive the scenic 200 miles (3.5 - 4 hours) through the mountains.

Purchase your lift tickets online through the Aspen Snowmass website well in advance. Buying early guarantees the best rates and ensures availability during peak winter holiday weeks and busy weekends.

While having a car is convenient for touring the extended area, you really don’t need a car in Aspen. The town is highly walkable, and the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority provides free bus service connecting downtown to all four ski mountains and the airport.

Aspen sits at an elevation of 8,000 feet. To prevent altitude sickness, drink plenty of water before and during your trip, limit alcohol intake, and give your body a day to adjust before strenuous activity.
